OK, well I'm going to take my full test in the next few months. I just need to find sometime to revise for the theory before i get everything in motion. Laughing

Could someone recommend a 250 bike that is under 33bhp? (links to sites/ ebay would be useful) I was going to go for a 400 restricted, however insurance companies don't seem to take the restriction into consideration, and it would cost around £1500 to get it insured. Neutral

Also what companies are good for insurance?

In regards to insurance, do a quote with everyone possible to find the best for you, you will be surprised.

Why a 250 specifically?

For instance a Bros 400 makes a quoted 33hp, while an rs250 makes around 58hp and has a higher insurance group.

Big trail bikes often tend to be quite low powered for their cc and have low insurance groups.

There's a difference between 17 and 19 i would think, my car insurance for a 1100cc 206 was £1700 fully comp! The only company i have tried so far was bennetts. I'm looking for a sporty bike, however it doesn't have to be. I'm looking at spending a MAX of £2200 that's inc insurance, so id say about 1500 TOPS

Ok mate, i'm not going to lie to you, my knowledge of motorcycles is far from good. OK lets change the question to. UNDER 33bhp. I presumed 400 would be more expensive to insure.

A 400 sports bike will be more expensive to insure that a 250 commuter bike. But a 250 sports bike will be more expensive to insure than a 400 commuter bike probably.

If you have a look around, there's various guides giving the Norwich Union insurance groups for most bikes - however most companies doing them differently, so just use it as a vague guide.

Also a 250 is going to be hard to find as there not really sold in this country, mostly imports.

Try eBike insurance, far cheaper than any quote form all the big one (Bennetts and Carol Nash) you also get free breakdown. Cool

well you should try go-compare as well its quite good and go and buy a copy of mcn they have loads of insurance companys in the back, on alot of occaisions bennetts is more expencive than others and dont include the legal expenses in the price so this is added on, also try putting your own volentey excess on it this will reduce the price as well, i paid 1000 for my fzr400 this was including the restriction price and then 650 for my insurance so thats a total price of 1650 for a whole bike in good working order, they are also even with the restriction in and if you were to remove them become even more quicker, the only thing about most of the 400's is that they are japenesse imports so will be in km's but this is no problem with a sticker which goes over the dash.

Take a look at this site, it has a list of 33bhp bikes (and bikes that have restrictors available). It's not exhaustive, but will give you a place to start from.

I've got a KR1s. Restricting a 2 Stroke kills them big time. You'll munch oil like an american at Mcdonalds with Burgers and get 90mph strangling it to death where it should be doing 120mph.

I'm considering selling mine on and buying a GS and risking riding unrestricted and keeping below a ton once my 2 year points restriction comes up in October.

My Bike is go for the Bros i'm 18, No NCD, 1 accident and still got a quote for £400 TPO with MCD on my KR1,.

is fully comp really necessary on a bros? its not exactly worth tens of thousands and parts are easy enough to come by. Might be worth TPFT for a couple of years for some NCB.

Its a bit off-side, but what about a decent old trail bike? You should be able to pick up a good one for less than a grand and insure it as a classic for peanuts... Ebay usually has stuff like XL250s, DT250s and the like...

I'd go TPO personally - if you add up all the costs in making a claim on FC/TPFT (excess, loss of NCB, higher insurance, possibly cancelled insurance, extra premium) it often comes out cheaper to just get TPO and except any loses - it can work out that by claiming for a stolen bike you actually end up relatively losing money in comparison to not claiming!

Obviously as the price of the bike goes up and insurance goes down it makes more sense to get better insurance.

some insurance companies actually charge more for 400s than 600s. I think it's because some of the 400s are imports.

thats just what iv found from my experience anyway

Have a look at a GPZ500. Maybe not as sporty as you're after, but a good all round bike.
