warning yet another long winded post of mine....
Today I spent sometime with a mate , he's off to go live in Canada , I helped him pack a few things and tie up some loose ends. Damn alot of people have left this year, there were quite
a few last year but its June and more people have left in these 6 months than all of last year.
And also to pick up the salvage that leavers usually leave behind , I got some ok stuff , some large
speakers , some old mini discs and lots of house plants my home is starting resemble a jungle
they always leave behind house plants, and a ton of books which I'll dump down at the charity
shop, and 2 bottles of advocate , who the fuck drinks advocat ? , do we have any polish people
who will take these bottles of advocat off me? , I seem to be amassing a small collection.
I said well I suppose this is goodbye, shook hands and saod send me a post card when you get there
I usually say this and we swap emails for a bit then drift apart.
"well if I completely fuck it up I can always come back," he said. got me thinking....
3 months ago when frog went to carve his new life in Sweden he also made remarks about
"one day I may come back"
Infact alot of folks I know who have emigrated have said one day they may come back usually with
some sort of comment of .... but I doubt it.
Enough beating around the bush.
My question is this, if you do sort of like bugger off elsewhere which many of us BCFers infact
most of the wider population have plans to move elsewhere , can we ever come back if say you
really do fuck your new life up?.
Sure there is the story of the prodigal son (who goes off to see the world) who is embraced back
home by his father with open arms, but what really are the rules?.Intra EU living is fine.... I think...
but what about farther afield?.
I know thereare rules regarding NHS treatments you leave for 6 months even if you pay UK taxes
you can't use the NHS for a year. But what of coming back? , in that if its allowed then it suddenly
becomes a nothing to lose scenario?.
Or is this is quirk of dual citizenshippery, since surely people like Mento have dual citizenship or could
step on an airplane tommorow and come back and live her life as it was right( though she hasn't been
away all that long).
Any thoughts?

There is a lot of grass is greener. Same aplies to the Saffers and Kiwis etc that come here. . . . . .
Not to say I have not thought about it!
Almost went to California to start a new life at one time. I choose the 'new' Englad option for 'reasons'.
People screw up, if you don't try, you don't know, there is no harm coming home with the tail between your legs. . . . . . I would only but admire for trying.
It's like any decision in life . . . some are wrong!
I had to come home with my tail between my legs and a baby in my arms when I screwed up!!!! Very hard but I tell you . . . . . . . sometimes, screwing up makes you 'more' of a person.
Besides, I have heard some really posetive stories of people moving abroad.
Just dont under-estimate how important you own upbringing/family is.
Not sure if that has anything to do with the question , but it's my little humble thoughts
Good luck to your friend. |

Apparently two thirds of people who emmigrate to Spain come back, so it can't be that difficult(though I realise you did say out of the EU)
To be honest I don't really know, all I know is coming back after living in Spain for two years hasn't really posed any major problems.
As said it really is the grass is greener, seems alot of people think their lives will be better by a substantial degree if they move somewhere else, the reality being it doesn't really help. If your life is shit being somewhere else is unlikely to change it, you'll soon discover you still have to work, no fun, and eventually realise your life is not really much better than it was in England(apart from probably the weather), and think "Hey, why bother missing family and life long friends?", and come back.
Obviously this doesn't apply to everyone, but certainly to a large amount of people I've met who foresaw some sacred land or something.
Just realised this actually has fuck all reference to the question, but meh, I'm posting it anyway. |

There is info here on NHS treatment.
https://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/International/OverseasVisitors/index.htm
Basically if you move abroad and then come back for a visit you will only be entitiled to emergency treatment. If you come back to live then you will be entitiled to all treatment.
If you emigrate here from abroad then I think you have to be resident for 12 months before you can get free non emergency treatment. ____________________ My liver is evil and must be punished! |
