Half-Life 2 code leaked online

The game is eagerly awaited by fans
The makers of the eagerly awaited Half-Life 2 have appealed for help to track down who leaked the source code of the game on the internet.
The software is not the full game but contains core information about it.

Valve, the makers of Half-Life 2, said the leak followed a concerted hacking effort on the company's computers over a number of months.

The source code lies at the heart of a game and is kept a closely guarded secret to stop other people copying it.

'One of those weeks'

Half-Life 2 is the sequel to one of the most widely acclaimed games of all time. The original garnered numerous awards for its strong plot, complex puzzles and the intelligence of the enemies in the game.

The new game had originally been due for release at the end of September before being knocked back to Christmas.

Gabe Newell, Valve
But the leak of the source code of Half-Life 2 has raised fears of a further postponement.

Developers Valve have confirmed that the software that has appeared on the net is indeed the computer code behind the game.

It includes the physics engine, the sound system and various other pieces of code from other developers, but not any of the levels or the graphics.

The team at Valve has five years working on Half-Life 2, with an average of 30 people working on the title at any one time.

"Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve," said Valve founder Gabe Newell, in a statement post on the fan site, halflife2.net.

He said that someone had accessed his e-mail account in September.

Soon after this, he started having problems with his computer but he was unable to find any virus or worm. Nevertheless reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows.

Keystroke logging

"For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account," he said.

"Around 19 September someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree."

Mr Gabe said that software to record computer keystrokes were installed on several computers at Valve.

In his statement, the Valve founder appealed for help from Half-Life fans to find out who was responsible for leaking the code.

"If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details," he said

"There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC (Internet Relay Chat), so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great."

Valve have set up a specific e-mail account, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com, for people to send any information.

Yep, I have the source Very Happy

If I could be bothered I could compile it, but there's no textures or anything in it, ie. no weapons/people/maps or anything. All you'd get out of a compile is a pretty useless game engine, but make some textures, and you got yaself your own half life 2!

I feel sorry for the programmers, they must have spent ages on this and then someone else gets it for free. Damn black hat hackers. Evil or Very Mad

5 years of hard work down the pan for a whole bunch of people. Dead funny, that is. People like myself, who use Steam atm can't use that anymore either because that's been compromised too. So has the Havok engine, which is a licensed product for Valve, so all in all it's much worse news than just some leaked code. Sad

I agree - I don't find it at all amusing either, unless you'd like to see the bottom fall out of the games industry Confused.

Zak, I disagree. If you think that you can go to the cinema and watch ten minutes of adverts, then an hour and a half of perhaps average film. This will cost you 6 quid or something.
If you think how long you might spend playing a game such as half-life 2, £24.99 (from Amazon) is actually a bargain. Especially considering that ten years ago the best game out was something like Doom, which cost a tenner more and you could complete in a couple of hours if you were good enough. Thats not including multiplayer or the replayability of something like Half-life, which would compare better to a DVD which might cost you £18.00.
I think games are better value for money that they've ever been.
(except maybe console games).
And I've been waiting with baited breath for Half-life and I'll be mightily annoyed if its not released on the first of december!
