1988 fz600 oil type???

me mates got an fz600, and wishes to know if anyone knows what kind of oil it takes? cheers

Hi

Basically the old XJ600 (pre Diversion) engine. In which case 20W40 SE grade oil is listed in the Autodata book.

Car oil will do, I just bung any type in mine now, after being introduced to the wonder that oil is oil, people will disagree greatly with this, but it works for me.

not sure whether to post a new topic or reply to this but its oil related so yeah lol....

basically hes stuck a litre of 10/40 car oil in it, however he still keeps getting an oil warning light Confused

he told me hes been riding for around 60 miles with the light on, he thinks its just a warning to say the oil is low? i thought big bikes were like cars, oil pressure warning light where as soon as that lil fecker comes on the engine is bone dry? anyone confirm this, also its started to make some rattly noises and has got louder Surprised

or does it just need more than a litre of oil? the little window where he checks the level is dirty so he cant see how much is in there Confused

My GPZ takes 3.4 litres of oil, so I reckon it will need more than a litre.

Have you changed the filter too, not sure if that will have anything to do with rattling but I think I read somewhere it might.

The oil light used to come on about 1500-2000 miles after i'd done an oil and filter change on my old xj600. I had the same problem with the sight glass. My solution was to try to make sure I did an oil change every 1500 miles. I must have been doing something right as it never blew up or broke down until the next owner threw it down the road.
