UPDATE -- Last few days of data collection. If you've thought about it but haven't decided yet now's the time. Thanks!

PLEASE DO NOT READ BEYOND THIS POST IF YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN THE SURVEY AND INTEND TO DO SO!

=======================

Update -- Respondents so far (as expected) are mainly male; I would be particularly grateful if those who have already filled in the survey could pass it on to their female partners/friends. Thanks!

=======================

Please note: this is not a commercial survey (and therefore not SPAM); the mods have approved this posting.

If you have any questions, please email me at the addresses at the bottom of this message.

=======================

Dear all,

I'm running a survey for my PhD project and was wondering if you would be kind enough to participate and forward this invitation to your partners, friends, and colleagues. Cash prizes totalling £800 will be randomly assigned to participants. People who have taken the survey so far have enjoyed it -- I guarantee it's anything but boring! More information is attached below.

Please note that you must be 18 or over to participate.

If your last name starts with letters A to M, please go to: https://gam.questionpro.com/

If your last name starts with letters N to Z, please go to: https://gnz.questionpro.com/

Thank you for your help,

Nicola

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SURVEY ON NORMATIVE JUDGEMENT

If you agree to be a participant in this scientific survey, you will be asked to express your opinion on 12 simple stories describing actions. In return for your participation, you will be entered into a lottery with ten £50 prizes, one £100 prize, and a £200 grand prize. The names of twelve participants (out of a total of around 150-250) will be randomly extracted. At the end of the survey, you will be able to enter an email or mail address where you wish to be notified if you win. These personal details will be stored separately from your responses, and will only be used to notify you if you should be randomly selected as a lottery winner. If you win, you will be notified by August 31, 2007.

The survey should take about 30 minutes to complete. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions you will be asked – we are simply polling opinions. Some of the questions are very simple; there are no tricks. All the information you need to answer the question is in the stories you will read.

Some of the behaviours you will be asked to think about are quite normal; others may be regarded as unpleasant, even shocking. However, they do not go beyond what you can read about in mainstream British newspapers. Indeed, many of the cases you will hear about are actually taken from or inspired by the news.

This study has been approved as adhering to ethical guidelines for research involving human subjects by the Institutional Review Board of the University of Michigan. This means that:

* You must be at least 18 years old to participate.
* You can only take this test once.
* Your participation in this project is voluntary. Even after you give consent by clicking on the button below, you may decide to leave the study at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you may otherwise be entitled.
* The study is completely anonymous. You will not be identified in any reports on this study. Records will be kept confidential to the extent provided by US federal, state, and local law. However, the Institutional Review Board or university and government officials responsible for monitoring this study may inspect these records.
* You may refuse to answer any question for any reason, and still choose to be entered in the lottery draw. Please contact the principal investigator for instructions on how to do so if this is the case.
* You may stop the survey at any time, and still choose to be entered in the lottery draw. Please contact the principal investigator for instructions on how to do so if this is the case.
* There are no risks involved, and the only discomfort you might experience could derive from thinking about unpleasant actions. However, as noted above, you do not have to focus on questions that make you feel uncomfortable and can skip them.
* Although you may not receive direct benefit from your participation, others may ultimately benefit from the knowledge obtained in this study.
* All data collected will be only used for statistical analysis and publication of results at the University of Michigan.
* You will incur no costs in participating.

If you have any questions about the aims of this research you can contact the Principal Investigator at the following addresses:

Done. Hope it helped.

I was slightly confused about how I was going to express my feelings to the guy who killed himself on the island given that he had no contact with anyone. The fact that he killed himself might also make it a bit more tricky.

Thanks Mjolnir, of course it helps!

The thing about that case was meant as 'imagine you could... would you?' Hope it didn't make a huge difference.

Tried it, but it reset half way through.

It would seem that I'm so psychologically challenging, it just couldn't handle my responses. Rolling Eyes

Well, thanks for trying! Did you get an error message of some sort? I'm sorry about the problems, I'm paying a lot of dough for this software and I wish something like this didn't happen...

Naw, it just went back to the initial message then started again. Probably just a glitch, these things happen. If I have time (and I probably will, being as I am; at work) I'll try again this afternoon.

An interesting half hour, most of which could be summed up with "if it doesn't affect others negatively, then do what you like" (in my case, anyway) Smile
