Emily is removed from Big Brother


Emily Parr has been removed from the Big Brother house for using a racially offensive word to another housemate.

The 19-year-old from Bristol was taken out of the compound at 0330 BST and was forbidden from having any further contact with the 11 other contestants.

This week's eviction vote has been suspended, in which Emily was nominated along with Shabnam Paryani.

A spokeswoman for Channel 4 said that the decision had been taken because "such behaviour won't be tolerated".

Channel 4 said the offensive term was not broadcast in the programme during a live stream, and was immediately reported to senior production staff.

Emily said: "Are you pushing it out, you nigger?" to Charley Uchea, while they were dancing in the living room on Wednesday evening.

In consultation with broadcast executives, the decision was taken to remove Emily from the house because she had breached rules governing contestant behaviour.

This includes causing serious offence based on the grounds of race.

Angela Jain, head of the Big Brother commissioning team, said: "The word nigger is clearly racially offensive and there was no justification for its use."

She added: "She [Emily] understands why her involvement has come to an end and she very much regrets what she said.

"I think people watching the show tonight will agree that Emily spoke carelessly rather than maliciously - certainly Charley and Nicky, the two housemates most directly involved in the conversation with her, seemed to accept that she did."

Ms Jain said that the decision had been taken in the wake of the alleged racist bullying of Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty on Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year.

The broadcaster was censured by media watchdog Ofcom and ordered to make a series of on-air apologies for the incident which prompted a flood of complaints.

I know the typical statement '...I'm not racist but...' means that the next thing that comes out of their mouth is one of the most racist things known to man or beast.

However, I am not racist but, WTF is with trying to protect minorities in this over the top PC bullshit country that we live in?

If Charley had said something in the same ilk as Emily, would she have been evicted.

The answer, no!

I dont mean to come across as high and mighty or poking fun or aimed at anyone, but isn't this just a knee jerk reaction due to the debacle with Jade Goody?

I think it's pretty racist that someone with black skin is allowed to say 'nigger' and someone with white skin is not. Surely the black girl needs to be booted aswell, she said that word several times.

What I didn’t get about the last row about BB was that all the knobs who complained said it was terrible seeing it because they did and people watched it for entertainment.

No one wanted those rows more than the majority of public, it was slightly entertaining and funny to see the scum that is Ms Goody make herself look like a twat. Shilpa, is has been brought up in a Bollywood bubble, sheltered, she hasn’t met people who don’t fall at her feet and compliment her on her looks every time she struts passed.

Millions of viewers for example watch Hollyoaks, they’ve had race related episodes, even a few in a row..….ok it’s before the water shed so there’s nothing that offensive, but young people watch it for entertainment

Intelligent viewers of BB understand that real people in a reality show, might say things that are offensive to some people, this is because this actually happens in real life. In this case, it is an offensive word, but not said as an insult.

The only reason I went along with the Jade Goody is racist bandwagon was because I hate her and couldn't for her to be out of the public limelight.

You could argue that the "white" part of the comment is superfluous, otherwise what is it if it isn't racist? Would "black trash" be considered non racist? I think not.
