...to increase the size of your carbon footprint?

Obviously you don't want it to cost you anything, so leaving windows open in winter is generally not a good idea (though we do it, for the cat).

I leave my car engine running at level crossings (lots of those around here). We burn coal and wood, and just about every piece of paper/cardboard rubbish we can find, in our fireplace. We heat our water twice daily, when once would probably do. We have a family bath every night, on top of showers.

Erm...pretty paltry actually. Embarassed

Does anyone have any others that are free or low-cost? I'm sure I've forgotten some that I do.

When your tyres wear out, ask the garage to give you them once they're removed.
Then burn them in your back garden.

Not really low cost, but every piece of electronics is sitting there, warming the house with the toasty glow of a hundred LEDs saying "I'm on standby, ready to do your bidding, o keeper of the clicky".

I have lights that come on via a timer, that I haven't changed since winter.

Heating's on, but I'm just wearing a cotton bathrobe. I'm sure if I got dressed I could turn it down a tad.

I also went 100 miles yesterday, just to meet some new people and have a ride. Spent more time in the red a whole lot more than I usually do. Sure my MPG took a bit of a battering.

I'm off to fill the kettle now, even though I only need to boil enough for one mug.

I try and decrease mine as much as possible.

I use biodiesel in the car, recycle what I can, etc.

I'm not a hippy, but we have been seeing some fairly fucked-up weather recently.

I leave my computer on for 16 hours a day. I don't use stand by mode, or screen savers, just left on all day.

Everything is on stand-by.

I have some curtains shut, so the light is on.

I have left my bathroom light on by accident.

I still drive for fun and not out of necessity.

BTW, Bio-fuels have been discredited recently as not as helpful for the environment compared to modern day petrol and diesel engines.

A warm April was met by a miserable May, the weather always counters itself, there is nothing odd about the weather. Records of metrological data is only backed up by 400 years worth of activity.

There are a few advantages of them: -

- If sustainable growing techniques are used for the fuel crops, they do not damage the environment in themselves.
- They will still be there when the oil runs out.

Unfortunately...

- Petrochemical fuels are still used in the processing, production and transportation.
- There isn't enough space to grow them using conventional growing techniques.

Admittedly the main reason I use biodiesel is to save money. Same with turning lights/computers/etc off and trying to use the heating as little as possible.

Some good tips there guys. Thumbs Up

My missus counters a lot of what I do , or try to do. She turns things off from standby and she makes me recycle plastic bottles, which involves taking bagfuls to a special skip in town. It does require use of the car though, so it's not all bad.

My PC is left on 24 hours a day, though I do turn the monitor off at night to extend it's life (leaving the PC on is supposed to do the same).

Leaving shop doors open in winter is another good one, it kicks off their thermostats.

I'm pretty anal about saving water though, even though we're un-metered. What can I say, I have certain inexcuseable weaknesses. Embarassed Which also means I'm pretty conservative with the kettle. Damn...am I trying hard enough? Confused

You don't have to use the water, just make sure it's full when you boil it. You could always run a dehumidifier next to the kettle, to save losing any water from steam.

But everywhere in the world can use this energy.

When it comes to water there are billions of people around the world who still don't have healthy water to drink. A travesty tbh.

You have your mind in the right places Hetzer. Wink

Then we should all run dehumidifiers, and send the water to the needy in plastic bottles. By plane.

Agreed.

A friend of mine is taking a water purification plant and some water-saving irrigation equipment to Senegal, where there is hardly any clean fresh water. I'm fully in support of him Thumbs Up

My ongoing scheme for world domination means that my plan is to eventually be travelling between here and NZ every six months.

By plane, of course.

I think the whole carbon footprint thing is yet another way for governments to try and repress us.

Have you seen this scheme where companies can "trade" carbon emissions? So that manufacturing companies are given a quota of carbon they are entitled to expend, but which if they don't expend it, they can "sell" to companies which have already used up their quota.

How exactly is that encouraging larger companies to reduce their emissions anyway? i.e., its not, not at all. Its simply enabling them to not really bother to change the way they are already doing things.

Nah, stick them on a big container ship at Milford Haven, let "global warming" take it's place near the Devon coast 3 days into the journey, have oil spill all over the lovely coastline.

Then have many more polluting boats helping with clear up, then send all the water by plane, by which time the water will have gone off and will have to go through industrial filterisation systems.

THEN put all the water 50 miles away in the sahara desert and tell the Africans they must catch 50 year old 4 Star buses to get to the water.

Africans get water. Europeans get high on exhaust fumes. Thumbs Up

You've all forgotten the easiest and most enjoyable way to increase one's carbon footprint. Accellerate as hard as possible from every stop in whatever vehicle you happen to be using.

I have a shower every morning.

We tumble dry all our clothes so they're soft and fluffy Very Happy

Sometimes, I go the long way home from work for a giggle...

Carbon footprint is all tosh in my opinion. It's really too late to make such a measly difference, the damage was done with the testing of atomic bombs. Me selling my petrol-guzzling alfa isn't going to save the planet.

I ride a litre bike and usually fill it up every couple of days.

I've had three new set of tyres in as many months.

I shower morning and night.

I like heat and therefore I like the central heating.

I dry clothing on the radiators and sometimes have the windows/doors open.

I buy lots of packaged foods and bin the packaging.

All my electricals sit on standby.

My wife recycles paper, glass, plastic and garden waste.

She turns the heating down.

She puts the washing out side to dry when possible.

She prefers organic food for herself and my son, the packaging is usually biodegradable.

She composts food waste and uses the compost on the garden.

She doesn't ride a bike as well as drive a car.

I should consider buying Carbon Credits from my wife. Confused

All this recycling, carbon footprint etc is all a load of balls.

What good is me recycling my cornflake packets when China is building five new coal-fired power stations every week?

In the interests of good neighbourly conduct (and because I hate a cold bike seat) I have installed patio heaters around our private car park.

In addition to this, I leave my bike running when not in use to save time letting it warm up.

On the upside, I have to employ a third world person to make sure no illegal immigrants steal it, he and his four wives, 18 children and their yak enjoy generous housing in what used to be a lockable bike shed. (Strangely; no one here has a bicycle...)

Oh! I rev my bike at traffic lights too. Cool

Leave my PC fully on, and use my dad's downstairs cos I can't be bothered to go up to mine in my room

Charge my phone all the time

Go long way to work for the ride

Go for long rides for the fun of it

When needed, drive my dads car in the garden(2.1TD), less than 6 feet.(could push it if bothered)

Ride my brothers bike just cos it different to mine.

use the oven for the odd thing.

Play on the XBOX whenever possible, using TV and all other vids etc as they're linked in

CCTV system running 24/7... I could go on when I think of more..

Driving 4,200 miles round Spain and up through Europe doing a very healthy 11-15mpg all the way giving a total CO2 output of about 900kg. I feel that I am doing my bit to help global warming. Razz
