Pretty much what the title says.

Number plate N416 MFC, mirrors missing, looks pretrty battered and ingnition barrell has dents in it (but doesn't look particularly abused)

I've never seen it around here before and its a little suspicious, anyway i can find out if its been reported stolen?

If it's in Luton it's bound to be stolen, or just about to be stolen.

Good idea would be to phone your local police station. They can do a PNC from there, or even send a patrol past for a routine check?

DONT ring 999 though....just the local station.

Jesus christ, talk about sticking your nose in, my bike is battered with a mirror hanging off and dents all over. Does that mean I nicked it, plastering somebody's reg number on t'internet just cos their bike is a bit twisted is a bit drastic. Rolling Eyes

Firstly its not been plastered all over the net, its been put onto a web forum...

Secondly what if it were your bike outside a members house, that was stolen and all someone with suspisions had to do was make a cursory phone call.

If the guy is genuine he wont mind a couple of questions.

I'd be pissed if someone came up to me and started asking if I'd nicked my bike to be honest with you...

I don't agree with you at all.

The bike looks like its been taken for a joyride .....its battered, crashed on both sides and ignition barrell has a dent in it.

Even if theres just the smallest chance it is a stolen bike i may as well get it checked out as there's no harm in that.

I'm not exactly going to go and ask anyone because i havn't got a clue whos bike it is!

I was just wondering if the police have a way of simply checking if the bike has been reported stolen.

A recon a simple polite phone call to the local police station and let them know, they can then check, if it has not been reported - nothing happens no-one is upset, if something is amiss there could be one happy biker out there who will get their bike back.

I personally wouldn't mind if someone had checked for me - having read in MCN on how little bike crime gets sorted compared to cars, i would welcome any help i would be getting.

If it has been nicked and battered about, it's probably better that the owner never sees it again.

If it reappears you just land up with a load of grief and time-wasting from the insurance company. Then they decide they want to fix it but they're never the same again after that.

If it's gone, best it stays gone in my oppinion.

when i got mine back it didnt have any mirrors, ignition smashed, needed a new speedo cable, new back tyre and new chain and petrol cap. id consider that to be a pretty aweful state however i was overjoyed id got it back.
if it is stolen im sure any bike owner would be glad to get it back no matter what the condition is i know i would.

What colour is it? One of the members from another forum had his Cat stolen some time ago and I'm sure he'd love it back if this turns out to be his.

You'd be just as pissed if your bike was stolen and nobody batted an eyelid.

Going from experience, I'd be quite happy for a policeman/woman to come and ask me if my bike was nicked, I've got nothing to hide and it's a comfort to know they look/take interest in this stuff.

When my MZ reappeared after being stolen, I soon wished they'd thrown a match in the petrol tank. Four months of headaches later it was finally sorted out. It had been ragged about for three days, crashed on both sides and the fork seals were blown.

The insurance asessor was all for patching it back together in what seemed to me to be a fairly halfarsed manner. I dug my heels in and told him I wasn't having it back until the frame had been jigged. He didn't like this idea one bit and eventually wrote it off. Fucked if I was riding the thing without checking the frame was straight. If it hit the ground hard enough to blow the seals on the 12" travel Marazocchi forks, it hit hard enogh to bend.

Also having had some wee scrote with no mechanical sympathy ragging the arse off it for three days, what sort of condition is the engine going to be in?

If my bike is stolen why would someone come up to me and ask if my now nonexistant bike was stolen?

I've had 2 bikes stolen in the past, the first I never saw again, the second I wished i'd never seen again.
When my CB125 was stolen I think I was waiting about 8 weeks before the insurance company paid up. When my XL125 got taken I waited a similar amount of time, then I got a call from the police informing me they had my bike at a compound at Hyde police station and would I come to collect it. The following day I got an offer from the insurance company. I had to ring them and tell them i'd just got the bike back but it was damaged. The insurance co then cancelled the offer and said I had to take it to a local dealer and they would get an estimate to repair it. That took another 6 weeks, then they said it wasn't repairable and offered me less that they had previously. When I queried this they said that the bike was damaged. No shit sherlock!!! When I said that thieves had damaged it they said that normally recovered bikes only had bust ignition locks so the other damage must have been there before.
They didn't seem to be able to comprehend that a 125 trail bike would get thrashed and crashed off road til it died.
I think i eventually got paid out about 4 months after I lost the damn thing.

Mine looks like that, come and get nosey with me and ask me if I nicked it, then call the police with a foot up your arse.
