Hi All,

Oh well may get flamed for being a safety Nazi but am doing a Bike Safe course this Saturday nr Selly Oak, Birmingham.

Will let you know how I get on.

I used to ride bikes and passed my test when I was 17 and progressed to a good old 1989 RD 350 but only had for a couple of years and then progressed to cars when I was 20.

Last year aged 34 I could finally afford a car and Bike (Plus convinced missus to let me have one, moved house double garage etc etc!!LOL) and bought a FZ6 Fazer. I feel pretty confident riding it, but thought for the cost of £50 could learn something that may save my life.

Wil let you know how I get on

PS Convinced my next door neighbour (CBR 600) and my Dad (CBR 600) to also attend with me!

Cheers

Jlo

Me and the Mrs did Bikesafe last summer from the Ace cafe. It probably didn't cover much that we weren't already aware of (after 15 years of riding) but it was a great refresher, a good jolt out of complacency, and a great value for money fun day out. Enjoy. Thumbs Up

Bear in mind that Bikesafe is an assesment, with some recommendations at the end of it..

to get realy benefit, you shoud take those recommendatons and then go on an advanced training course, wher you can tell the instructor what the bikesafe outcome was, and they will help you overcome any bad habits you've got.

I recently did some advanced training, and I can't rate it highly enough.

My road speeds have increased by between 5 and 10 mph, and I'm still finding I have more visibility, and braking space than I had before, all down to improvements in road positioning.

There is always the IAM, my friend is doing it at the moment.

https://www.iam.org.uk/aboutus/

She has only had 2 sessions so far, and says her riding has improved loads in that short time.

So If Bike Safe is £50/60 quid for one day, then IAM is really good value at £85 joining fee (£75 if under 25, plus I think you get around £30 back if you pass the exam within 12 months) and then £15 per session to cover instructor/assessors fuel expenses. You have a lot more sessions, so are getting more for you money.

Thanks all for your comments.

When I was 19 (now 35) I don't remember how many of you remember Star Rider course as I did my Gold Star Rider course which was the advanced (Although Star Rider has gone to certificate worthless now) but this did really helped in to taking the correct lines around corners.

I would recomend the advanced course to anyone, however at the moment I am really busy at work, and whilst I should redo it the Bike Safe course will be a refresher and is done in a day so is convenient!

I drive for a living as well and every 2 years have to have a half day training of 'defensive driving' training.

As I said before I am a confident (and I think safe rider) however I do appreicate my bike training was a long time ago and am fully prepared to be corrected out of some bad habits.

I think if I am recomended to retake by advanced via IAM from the Bike safe course then I will make time to do it.

Am really looking foward to it.

Cheers

Jlo

My day's training was a freebie from a friend, who teaches ROSPA examiners and instructors. She doesn't do 'training' any more.

I've been planning to do a bikesafe course, but must get the bike sorted properly first.
(I don't think they'd approve of my badly sealed/blowing exhaust at the moment... plus I need to get replacement chain and sprockets asap Rolling Eyes )

All courses are one day long and are run from the West Midlands Police Training Centre at Tally Ho, Edgbaston, Birmingham (next to Warwickshire cricket ground).

What an excellent day we had!

Started 8.30m, breifing, coffee and then very intersting class room session until 12.30. Covered DVDs looking at positioning, filtering and looking ahead at the road IDing hazards.

Then had a biker paramedic giving a first aid session showing what to do a the scene of accident, checking airway, how to safely remove helmets etc etc.

Then Lunch and afterwards a 3 hours ride out with a bike cop.

Covered town riding and then off to bridgenorth. Pretty strict (and rightly so) on speed limits in town but in a 60 limit quite happy for me to push on 70-85 where conditions allow.

So how did I do?

Well my advanced training from 16 years ago stood me in good stead with positioning. Liked my road positioning when aprouching side turns where cars waiting to pull out (Positioning off side as long as no on coming hazard). However pointed out that even when there is not a car waiting I should still adopt the same positioning.

Did 3 overtakes, 2 were excellent, and on the third overtake there was a good straight with a slight dip and haze.

I opted to go for it and while over taking 2 cars noticed a very small turn on my right (No hazard sign showing this). As I committed I just continued.

Got picked up on the third overtake as I expected as it is strongly advisable not to overtake where there is a turn right (someone could come out from the turn turning left, just check right and pull out on me overtaking)

He was very pleased with my riding which Is good to know I am not to much of a liability on the road!!!

The Attitude of the bike cops were excellent. We were told 'they are now in safe mode with ink taken out of there ball point pen' They all have bikes of there own, few of them had R1.

And yes some of them have crashed- thus no one is perfect, however by doing some training you can greatly improve your chances and get better enjoyment from riding.

Big Thumbs up Thumbs Up to the West Mids Bike cops. Thanks for a great day!

Highly Recomended!

Signing off

Jlo
