Do you have to tell your insurence company about a crash

Quick question folks my other half has had a crash she was 3rd party fire and theft so she can not claim on her insurence to get the bike fixed. I want to no if we have to tell the insurence company that she has had a crash. especially when it comes around to insurence renewal time and we are shopping around for a better price?

Does it affect your car insurence at all?

I think they'd probably like to know, but don't tell them if you don't intend to claim.

I had a bike stolen, and although I didn't claim (didn't even want to) they bumped up my premiums because I had a claim even though I didn't claim.

So keep it on the down-low and everything is sweet.

Keep it on a need-to-know basis.

No way! if you dont need their services dont ever tell them unless you want to pay more £££ for insurance unneccessarily!

By LAW you must advise your insurer of any accidents.

Accidents and claims are two different animals.

A company could refuse to pay out if the discover you had an accident and never informed them.

How would you like it if a convicted arsonist rented out your house but never told you?

You can of course say nowt and hope they never find out.

But the law says........

Mostly they would not load your policy savagely.

If they do shop around some do not even bother.

Insurance is mental these days the companies involved do even not know if their bums are Drilled, Bored or Countersunk.

so you should tell them if you smash a wing mirror of your gate then? even if your not going to claim..

ive had a couple of off's just fixed it up myself, if you tell them youve had an accident, they may ask you to go get an MOT test and want a copy of the cert.

wich costs £££

so dont tell them jack unless your going to claim.

I am not claiming anyway fixing it myself. As i am not claiming i dont see why they need to know. no one bar me and the bike where injured. ok coppers came and ambulance and i produced my docs etc and paid the £425 recovery cost

so why tell them i am screwing myself!

how does it work in the car then amount of time people that just pay and get it fixed its the samething!

i pay my insurance, tax all that its nowt to do with them seen as they aint paying for anything!

If it was bad enough for the emergency services to attend then it's probably the kind of accident they'd be better off knowing about.

Treesey200, it will depend a lot on the circumstances of the accident such as whether there was anyone else involved or any damage to anyone elses property. If there was then you really ought to be telling the insurance because if there is any come back then it could cause problems.

If the accident only affected your other half and her bike then although technically you should tell the insurance company, I would keep quiet and say nothing because they will only use it to load the premium next time.

In other words, cover you bum if you need to, but if not then just stay silent.

In response to the first post:

I've had several cars vandalized over the years and never told the insurance. Just fixed them back up myself with parts from breaker's yards and ebay.

If I reported them to the insurance, they'd be written off, despite their mechanical condition. The premiums would increase as well.

I suppose if you crashed into a wall or reversed into a bollard where no-one saw it, was hurt and no traceable damage was caused, you could do the same. Bit risky though....

If no third-party was involved and no property damaged then i most certainly would not tell the insurers. They would laugh all the way to the bank and load-me-up next year.

Be a bit cynical and understand how these companies operate. They don't insure folks because they like to give them piece of mind or even to ensure anyone hurt in a crash gets compensation - they do it for profit, pure and simple. If they can find an excuse to take more money off you then they will.
