Hi guys heres my first post hopefully you can give me some useful tips and ideas.

I recently blew the engine on my sv650s k5 ( yes k5!). The parts damaged were the Crank,Con rods and Big end bearings. Reason Unknown, I replaced the engine with another I bought from my local dealer and now have the original engine sat in my garage waiting to be sold for bits, rebuilt for sale as a whole engine or something that i wouldn't mind trying myself, Making the engine more powerful and lighter but still reliable enough to be used as an everyday engine with out the need to be rebuilt every 6 weeks for instance. I have an idea on how to do this but would like to hear from everyone else on what they think would be a practical and effective approach.

Thanks all michael

IMO it's not worth the money and effort.

Tuning is very expensive, hardly worth it on the road, and definitely hardly worth it on an SV650.

I think you can get big bore kits, which take them up to around 800cc. That'd probably get you the best bang for your buck.

Still, con rods, and crank replacement is neither cheap nor fun. Personally I'd just break it and sell it. Sump will be worth money, as will the clutch, basket, starter motor, maybe the head if it's not fooked. The good pistons maybe...

You can put the cams from an early model in the opposite side for front or back (I forget which) and it gives you a bit more go, if you want something simple.

Not sure what the site is, but I believe there's a 'Thunderbike series' website - there's a lot of people racing tuned, big bored etc SVs in the series, so should be some decent knowledge about it around.

Personally, I'd just get a replacement engine and sell your current one

thanks for the reply

I hear what your saying about selling the sump and heads etc, but there is just something that draws me to tuning the engine. So as long as i take my time with it i would still like to build an upgraded engine, as a project really rather than a nessesity.

a big bore kit does sound like the obvious answer but i would like to keep the 650 Cubic Capacity

Consider buying another engine and tuning it.

You can pick up an MZ engine for £50 and without too much work you can almost double the power output.

You've also then got a market to sell it to (MZ racers). You won't really have much of a market for an expensive, amateurly tuned SV engine.

If tuning was easy everyone would do it, and it wouldn't be so damn expensive.

there was an 800cc sv motor on ebay a while ago, went for £550. a normal one will set you back 250-350 depending on mileage.

I think you take K3 intake cams and put your 99-02 intake cams on the exhaust side. Not sure about K5 models, but that's how to do it on a curvy.
