Greetings everyone. My first thread in general chat so if it's a crappy topic, uninteresting read then be merciful. Karma

ok, So recently i changed bikes from a 99 Yamaha Fazer to a Kawazaki ZX7R and within the first few weeks of riding the bike i've had alot of different reactions from other road users.

Some of these include:

Arrow Car drivers sticking an arm out of the window and giving me the 'Slow the hell down' gesture. This happened twice the other week whilst i was doing around 30 within a 30 limit.

Arrow Vehicles moving over to the left so much they are virtually borderline with the curb. happens more so on the ZX7R than it did the fazer.

Arrow I was on a road around town that is two lanes wide each way. I came off a roundabout and proceded into the left lane, sticking to this lane as i need to take the following left exit shortly up ahead. In front of me is a BMW who's driver begins to start 'waving me past'. I'm behind him with left indicator flashing away thinking how dangerous that would be for me to rush past him just to go left. No idea why he tried to rush me past as i had no intention of overtaking him in such short distance.

Arrow Frequently have lorries/long vehicles placing left indicators on to signal me past on NSL roads. Although i'm greatful for this i'm always abit sketchy as i like to make it's actually safe to overtake or that they really aint just pulling over.

I will admit the ZX7R is fairly loud, although the can i had on my fazer wasn't exactly quiet either, I'm riding at pretty much the same speeds i would with either of the bikes but the reactions vary quite alot.
I don't ride up the rear of the vehicle in front of me, i usually keep a few car lengths distance until i find the oppertune moment to overtake.

I'm thinking it's due to the bike sounding like it's being revved to the max no matter how slow or fast you go on it, that combined with the race look. Where's the Fazer doesn't look like it'll pull as quick as it does i guess. Neutral

Anybody else experienced this with different bikes they have, riding pretty much the same yet recieving a different reaction from other road users around you Question

Practically every car I come across hugs the curb when I get near them, I don't ever overtake them though, I'd rather do it on my own terms.

i understand what u mean, now i only have an rgv250, but the other week i was coming past a school doing around 25 mph and a woman stood in the road waving her arms telling me to slow down, seems to have happened since i changed the cans and also coz the bike sounds revvy anyway

I get that quite a lot too. One car got so close to the curb he started peppering me with gravel and I was forced to overtake. (It was perfectly safe to do so but I was happy sat behind him)

Notice that very quickly after I got my Kwak. Nobody ever moved out of the way for my SV but loads of people do now.

Always raise L/H fingers in gesture of 'thanks' if I' get the chance to.

Note to self: must conduct survey of which cars move and which don't.

When i had a 2 stroke 125, going through town could be a nightmare sometimes. Damn near everybody would try racing me off from the lights, id get cut up, people laughing and making bizarre gestures and id generally get treated like crap.

With this bike, i get much the same behaviour as already stated. The whole driving in the gutter thing can be annoying at times. Its nice they are trying to give you some room, and i always give them a wave if i go past, but if im just plodding along and want to stay where i am, having them constantly watching me in the rear view whilst pretty much mounting the pavement doesn't do anybody any favours.

I find that people move over much more quickly if you've got a dark visor and leathers on.

Almost so quickly it looks like you've shocked them when they see you.

Certainly happens much more now I've put a louder can on the bandit and mainly wear a dark visor.

Not sure if my blue sidelight catches attention either.

Since my dark visor and lack of L-plates i've been treated well, thing is with me only being able to do 50/60mph, in a 40 zone cars wave me past and i sometimes have trouble passing because of the poor acceleration Sad and also i don't like being pressured into overtaking.

yeah i know what you mean too. my inline 4 does scream a little and also have cars with 2 wheels on the verge Shocked i dont keep my distance though, i drop back, reason for this is because they are always glued to their rear view mirror or whatever and not concentrating on the road. i dont want to be close to them when they dont see some......thing (cant think of an example) thats gonna make them crash.

Wow, the UK sounds tough on bikers. I guess having a little bike that looks like it'd be more suited for a race track and running at high rpm gives the impression that the rider wants to be at a race track. My sympathies. Around here, the cars treat us like other cars, and bikers usually wave to each other regardless of whether we know each other or not. Of course, when you're acting like you're riding a Harley-Davidson and "chugging it" at 2000 RPM on a big cruiser (The local flavor of bike) noone thinks you're trying to go fast or are even capable of fast acceleration in that gear. Depends , on the CBR more girlies will look at me , on the NTV they will look but only in disgust.

Oh wait we are talking about other vehicles.

NTV people dodge me like the plague you know people with 8-15K worth of car, alot of faster cars also try to take me on the NTV thinking they can destroy me, they are often unpleasantly surprised.

the CBR alot of people tend to try goad me into taking them on , A59 on Sunday was a good case ,

If cars are always pulling in for you when you don't want them to, might be worth sitting a bit further back - generally it only happens to me when I've got a bit closer.

As with others, I only overtake when I'm sure it's safe to do so.

While i did notice it when stepping from my gpx250 to the zx6 it really picked up once I put the new can on.

Its a nice thing and I do my best to give a wave of thankyou as I go past.

Some cagers cant seem to get out of your way quick enough once they spot you or hear you.

Caught me by surprise the first few times.

Never been offered to undertake though regardless of the situation.

I think when a 7R comes up behind a car driver it can look quite menacing. Lol

I've had more cagers than normal pulling o the side lately.. but mainly cos my exhaust is blowing, and makes the bike sound like agricultural machinery Embarassed Rolling Eyes

(Mainly my fault though, cos I renewed the downpipes, but forgot about the exhaust seals between the downpipes and the cans Embarassed )

killa, what make is that jacket? It looks rather great.

I used to get more feedback from people when I had my 2T 125, people would always look on the street etc. But the one I liked was when stuck behind a car at traffic lights, if there was kids in the back of the car they would always wave, never been waved at since I got my bigger bike.

I don't get this treatmen (only on a 50cc) i get the opposite Laughing If theres cars behind tailgating me or on a phone i don't let them past by moving a bit to the right. If i see a biker or someone who seems generally patient i'll move over and let them go.

Talking about people saying stuff, the other day some batty woman went past in her car shouting at me pointing at her head saying "HELMET! WEAR A HELMET!!"........I was wearing a helmet Confused And it was done up, to be fair she did look like quite a nutter.

Yeah i do the same, usually a quick thumbs up after passing by. Thumbs Up

This is the thing that has suprised me though with the change of bike, i mainly ride quite far back from the next vehicle in front, even if it's another motorbike. I never tailgate as i don't like to intimidate other road users and i don't trust myself to brake quick enough should something cause the said vehicle infront to slam the anchors on suddenly. Confused Guess i'll have to back off abit more and see how it goes Smile

oh and like what Shaun_04 said, what makes that jacket Killa, I'm after something similar to that but preferably all black for a decent-ish price. Question

If you can't see far enough ahead of the truck to know if it's safe to overtake or not, then you're to close to him.

road positioning can make a huge difference

yes i agree it certainly does, in one of the above cases i could see quite far past the lorry but the road veered to the left slightly followed by a right corner some distance on. Although it looked clear to me i still like to make extra sure due to the hedges on the road blocking view from seeing to the left side of the lorry. Hope that makes sense to somebody as i'm not sure if i've described that right Shocked.

If i'm behind a lorry/wagon of some length i usually keep about the same length if not more behind, can't see sod all when the visor is practically kissing the tail lights of the wagon in front. Hate it when car drivers do this as i'm sure the lorry infront can't see the car stealthed behind him. Confused

I've noticed that with the Bros, people just seem to dive out of the way of the utter heap that is smoking its way towards them. It's great - I get to work in record time Very Happy

On the CBR they seem more aware of my desire to keep it shiny and seem to be more willing to play 'chicken'.

That being said the only times I've had the arm-waving is on the CBR... maybe they realise I couldn't possibly be breaking the speed limit on the Bros Wink

I've had people actually pull over at the side of the road to let me get by. Not even in a layby, they just stopped and started waving me past. Then I saw them start going again as soon as I was gone. Crazy. Some people must REALLY hate having a bike behind them. My bike isn't even loud either!

People look on in horror when they see the Jawa bearing down on them in a cloud of blue smoke. Quite rightly too as it happens because the brakes are none too good.

If you want to see a crap attitude to bikes by car drivers, bung a set of L-plates on and see what happens. It's absolutely appalling the way they drive, like any road sense and common courtesy they initially had has gone out of the window.
