Cagiva Starter problems

just finished rebuilding my mito and its runin fine accept the starter don't work. i had it working for a bit and then all of a sudden it packed up. i thort it could be the battery aso i put a new one on and still don't work. when i press the button i just get a ticking noise, not from the starter motor that doesn;t move or make a noise. it;s just a ticking noise coming from somewhere and the lights go dim.
anyone know what could be wrong??

The starter has a relay which switches on the power from the battery to the starter motor (if the full power for the starter went through the handlebar switch then it would fry it quite quickly).

The click you are hearing is the relay. Either the relay does not have a feed from the battery, the wire from the relay to the engine is not connected / broken, the engine isn't earthed or the starter motor is fried.

Have you taken the engine out of the frame?

On the bottom of the engine there is the starter motor, with a screw on connector for the power feed to it. To check that is OK put the bike in neutral (make VERY sure of this), get a car battery and a pair of jump leads. Clip one jump lead onto the bike with the other end on the -ve terminal of the spare battery. Take the other lead, connect one end to the +ve terminal of the spare battery. Then touch the other end on the connector on the bottom of the starter motor. If the motor is OK then it should crank over. Be careful doing this. It the bike is in gear it will jump forwards. If you just use normal wire rather than something heavy duty (like the jump leads) then the wire will melt. If you touch the jump lead connected to the +ve terminal onto anything other than the starter motor connection then you will land up with loads of sparks.

Follow the big fat red wire from the batt towards the starter. You will find a little gold coloured relay in a rubber cradle with a diode on it and maybe a few other wires coming or going. The big fat wire should carry on to the starter.

Poke this relay and wiggle the diode and you problem could be solved. If not, follow kickstarts advice to "short" the starter.

If the starter motor works and the relay poking doesnt, follow every wire in the starter circuit and check the connections.

yea i have had the engine out, it had a bottom end seize but fixed and running perfect now. i'm pretty sure the wiring is fine, my dad checked it too and he's an eleccy so i think it's the relay. any idea of how much they are new or anywhere where i could get a second hand one??

Just checked and there not the ones i need its the solinoid that i need, my fault for calling at relay.

Hi

Short the relay out and see whether the starter then works (use something well insulated to short it out).

My guess is the cable that bolts to the starter motor is not securely in place.

i changed the little recangular relay and that made no differance so i put the old one on and nothin and i poked the starter solinoid and it turned over. then it wouldn't do it again! bloody bike!
where can i get a new one from?? and how much?
