I've gotten to the stage now where it's time to jump out from my parents. But i've considered doing something a bit different.

With the help of my old man i'm considering buying a property in Northern France and renting it out as a holiday home to friends and family. Granted i will still be living with my folks for the next few years until i'll be able to afford a home in this country but it'll make me some money and it's lower risk than spending 100k+ on a 2 bedroom flat in South Wales.

Has anyone bought a house abroad and if so what was the main problems?

Me and my dad can do most of the DIY work apart from any heavy building work or window fitting. I'd be looking at an old barn to clean up and turn into a Party place for a few weekends and to give somewhere for friends and family to go.

Check local legislation. If you cannot speak French, find an English-speaking estate agent.

I would advise staying in the place you wish to buy for a few weeks.
Do not fall into the typical trap of English foreign property buyers of "oh, the people are so nice."

People are people and the English are not exactly popular abroad.
