Edit:

This thread is ancient. A dirty spammer decided to dredge it up from the deep and ask me two years later if I wanted a free forum Rolling Eyes And I thought it was bad enough posting a new thread with spam, posting in one he went searching for thats 2 years old is just unforgivable.

So no after 2 years I am not interested in a free forum. Been there done that.

Most of the 'free forum' providers are the same: pretty shit.
Don't expect to get big membership numbers on one of those.

They're a lot more work to manage successfully than you would imagine. Most of them die in the first couple of months.

For a non-geek, the learning curve is steep, not to mention the amount of planning and documentation you need to go through before you're even ready to start.

It's not impossible though...

PM me if you want to test one out.

I have a pphb one. Its confusing it shows what i need to download but no where to download it. I have a page with one test forum on it and now i am stuck. I sort of thought it would be all there Embarassed didnt relise you had to build it bit by bit. Its will be a learning curve for me and really want to try it. Not worried about membership as yet i have mates who will join even if its just a few to start with. have to get past all this building first.

whats your target audience?

how many posters do you expect?

how will that audience react to annoying pop up ads or banners?

do you want just a forum or a CMS too (content management system)

have you taken a look here yet?
https://www.phpbb.com/ it might be of some help to you. also if you want a freebee go here https://www.proboards.com/index.html

You'd be better off with something that you don't have to install or host yourself.

https://www.yourbb.eu/?gclid=CP2ctaCf24wCFSdPEgod3nzrdg

https://www.myfreeforum.org/

https://www.createforum.com/phpbb/new_forum.php

Those were some of the first ones to come up when you google 'free forum'.

No, not if you don't know what you're doing.

I've learnt websire building by personal Trial and error, for Hosting, try HERE its not free, but not a bad deal really(£1 for first year for 20GB, but £15 per month, per year after that)-which I'd just cancel it or pay if you need it/don't mind. Can't heklp with forums. my dad runs one or two, but I( never learnt and it's not something I need. Thumbs Up

Would that be the one for the women going by the name of Janet? or the sub-sub forum for the women going by the name of June? Laughing
