Whilst watching the sidecars on telly fly round the TT, something occured to me:
Why the fuck don't they build them with any suspension? They weave all over the place when they hit even a tiny bump! There must be a reason for it (i'm guessing), but i'm buggered if i can work it out.
Question

Purely a guess, but could it be anything to do with stiffer handling round corners, to help the monkey on the back out a bit?

I would of thought the less roll it has round a bend, the easier it is for the monkey to help counter balance it?

I thought they did have suspension, just very very stiff and with little travel?

Getting the weight as low to the ground as possible is probably another reason.

This is probably a very stupid question, but why race a sidecar and bike? Isn't it faster to have the bike on its own?

Because you can?

One could argue 'why race a bike' when racing cars are often faster. Smile

Remember, racing sidecars are custom built from the start, more a case of this

I'd love to have a go at being a sidecar monkey but i doubt a 14 1/2 stone frame is ideal. anyone on here race one?

Question

Better traction, less weight = SPEEEED!!!

Who needs comfort? Quicker you go, quicker you finish the race, more chance you have of winning, less amount of time spent violently chucking yourself around on a metal frame, trying to synchronise with centrifugal forces and hanging on for your life.

Check out this thread. Heavier passengers can hold the sidecar down better around corners but may mean slower starts.

K, hope this helps someone!

I would have thought that having some form of damping would increase traction - the wheel would be in contact with the ground more and wouldn't be bouncing or skipping over bumps.
