i bought my bike from my fiances dad, he never used it but got it serviced just before i bought it, i was getting some weird noises last few days and checked the oil, there was no oil at all in the bike, ive only been riding it a few months and new once seen any oil dripping, i park in the same place everyday and theres not one drop of oil on the floor, either the service people didnt put any oil in or it has burnt the oil up.

what kind of damage could it have caused?

if you havnt seized it, chances are you have got away fairly unscathed.
the engine may have a bit more engine wear now than one of the same mileage, but she'll probly be alright, it might die a little earlier than normal is all,
why the hell didnt you check the oil when you got it??
its a common sense thing mate,
won't be doing that again Very Happy

Hi

What bike is it?

If it is a 4 stroke then most have plane bearings in crank and head and these need a good oil supply. Running them under load with low oil pressure (if the oil level gets that low) will destroy them pretty rapidly. Piston might well survive as there is likely to be enough splash lubrication from the remaining oil until after the crank is dead.

2 strokes will probably seize the piston first if you run out of 2 stroke oil.

All the best

Keith

It must have some oil in it otherwise I'm sure it would be dead by now after a few months of riding.

But its not unheard of a garage forgetting to fill it up. Check the oil atleast once a week, should be a daily check really.

Not sure if yours has an oil light?

alot of car driver's won't check their oil until the dash light comes on, which in most cars is the pressure light, not level!! If comes on then engine usually doesn't last much longer before it seizes.

get it topped up to the required mark on the dipstick.

So there are several possible explanations here, then:

1. The bike was serviced but the mechanic didn't change the oil (crap? Rip-off?)
2. The bike has a MAJOR oil leak (which you'd probably notice)
3. The bike is burning oil at a rate of knots
4. It was never actually serviced

Thinking
