I've got an R6 and I'm doing a couple of track days this summer. I've put a little bit of money aside to get my bike in tip-top condition before I go on, just so I have as much fun as possible.

I've recently changed the oil, and plan on changing my brake pads in the near future.

I was wondering what people would suggest in terms of tyre choice?

At the moment, I've got some Pirelli Diablo's on (Not corsas) which are pretty good. They've only had about 600 miles on them so far but I didn't buy them specifically for the track, more general tyres for use on the road and in rain if needs be.

What would people suggest? I spoke with someone from Colin Appleyards in Keighley and he suggested that I just put a Corsa on the front, or maybe a BT002 / 014 and then use it like that.

Do you think that'll be okay? Or maybe buy some track-specific tyres on eBay that have been used a little, but not enough to make them useless? That'd be cheap.

Ideally i'd like to get good value for money, and I'm not loaded enough to justify spending £250 on a full set of race tyres, that will only last a couple of days.

Thanks Smile

There was an article in Bike (or RiDE) recently where they did a blind test on 3 kinds of tyre, track/race, sporty road, and sport-tour.

All of the riders, (novice, experienced and racer) prefered track/race, sport tour and then sporty road in that order.

So if you're wanting a tyre for all round use, even if you're doing tracdays, then something like an Avon Storm ST, Conti Road Attack or similar might give you surprising results.

They did discover, tho, that the handling differences were down to the sport-tour and track tyres having a similar profile, and the sport-road being taller.

I doubt many of us will be able to get a top-end sporty road tyre anywhere near a good operating temperature.

I've used Pirelli diablo's on track before and couldn't fault them.

So personally I'd stick with the diablo's for now until you start finding the limits of grip (then use the money to get yourself on another trackday).

the point I was making, was that you can easily reach the lmits of grip afforded by a tyre if it's not operating within it's designed temperature range. That's why for the vast majority of is, a sport-touring tyre will actually give MORE grip than a sporty road tyre, as you'll be operating within it's temperature range much more

Ive just used a pair of Diablos for my first trackday at Snetterton and cant fault them. Gone all melted at the edges so they certaintly heat up enough and had enough grip for 80mph+ knee downs. I say stick with them and see how you get on!

For your first track day the road tyres will do you fine. Last week I did a day on my 675 with 010's on it. Was shifting at some points, tyres held realy well. More important that you get them warm before giving it the beens than having "race" rubber.
So stick with your Diablos and enjoy!
