Which big V-Twin?

I'm looking at getting a 1000cc V-Twin Superbike in a year or so, I have been thinking,

Suzuki TL1000R
Honda VTR/SP1/SP2
Aprilla RSVR Mille
or a Buell maybe?

Ducati's are out purely because of cost.

Any ideas or comments about those bikes?

I also have to add that I'm 6'5 so midget bikes are out.

The buells look good, I've seen a few with fully faired ones but don't know if many come that way, I would prefer a fully faired bike.

Don't see why Ducatis are out of the running.. they can be had for as much or as little as the Honda SPs or the Milles.

running costs aren't extortionate either, with many parts being as cheap, if not cheaper than some of the big jap manufacturers.

I've got a VTR as it happens, and can recommend it. That and the SPs, however, their tank ranges are abysmal.

I head the VTRs only get about 80miles to a tank, I don't really want an SV as i'm looking for something a bit special. Ducati's are out because of servicing prices and complexity, my ex flat mate has a monster and it has always had something wrong with it. The only thing putting me off a mille is that I here Aprilla have a dire parts department, and it takes ages to get stuff for it.

Why, pray tell - for I assume you mean the Guzzi?

I have a soft spot for Guzzis having ridden one for 25,000 relatively trouble free miles (until somebody reversed over it in a white van), and naturally feel defensive!

You can fault the SP1 for the tank, but you can't really fault much else.

I don't see what's the big deal having to stop after around 85 miles?

The engine sticking out the side, just doesn't look right to me, not on a sports bike. It's the same reason I don't like the boxer twins on the BMW's.

The tank range thing isn't a big deal but the fact my dad got 220 miles on a tank on his Sprint ST, would kind of piss me off I have to fill up 3 times to every one of his. I also bet that to fill it up doesn't cost a third of the ST Laughing

I only get about 85-95 on the 7R, i coudl tretch a little more but i hate risking it on reserve.
I quite like pulling into petrol stations, people look at your bike, you can check it over and have a rest.

Get the VTR....

But then i might be biased as it's my dream bike Embarassed

I like the look ofthe Guzzi, what's it like for parts and servicing etc?

I never had a problem with parts, plus servicing was dead simple, so I did it myself after it went out of warranty. What other bike can you check the valve clearances in 15 minutes flat!!!

I never needed to buy any parts unique to Moto Guzzi, as in common with most Italian bikes all consumables are shares with others - Brembo pads, pattern filters etc... I suppose it could get tricky if you needed panels, shaft bits etc, but there is an excellent Guzzi owners club (beard & b.o. compulsory..lol) who will point you in the right direction...

They do vibrate a bit, and the ladies love 'em!

I guess you're after a sports bike, imho, I'd say the only 'special' twin is Ducati 999.

ill vote for the sv thou, same engine as a tl thou but a better frame, newer and in my eyes looks better (tl looks over weight) sp1 would cost a fortune to run and they are realy hard and fast more of a track bike if u ask me.

By special I mean something you don't see everywhere I hate bikes like Bandits GSXR's R6's etc. because they are so common. I would like a bike that isn't like that.

The TL1000R does not have the same engine as the SV the TL has about 20bhp. The SV seems to be alot more (for lack of a better word) boring than the TL.

Idealy I would love a 916, But I don't think I deserve one Laughing

or could afford it.

I think it is between the RSV and the TL, I will look into the VTR but I don't think it looks as good as the others.[/list]

I have an SP1. I was in a similar situation last year, wanted a twin but there wasnt much choice.

I think I made the right choice, it is up there with any other twin (1098 excluded) not as fast or as quick as the latest IL4's but still a load of fun.

Tank range is a myth imo, I can happily get anywhere between 110-120miles before reserve light (and theres still another 4 litres to go) but it's not perfect, they need a power commander, else they ride like shit below 4k rpm (bare in mind that 4k rpm is almost half the rev range)
