As above , I was going to put a 400 engine in the yam xs250 until I just found out that honda Cb250 piston rings are only £12, would they fit my yam Xs250?

the xs 250 hs a bore and stroke of
78 55.0 x 52.4 mm
the cb250
72-76 56.0 x 50.6 mm . 77 - 86 62.0 x 41.4 mm
86 55.0 x 52.4 mm.
2000 53 x 53mm

the 86 model xs250 has the same bore and stroke as the from 86 cb250
in that case i can only assume they are the same.

ffs why am i searching through all this crap for you???
surely you know how to use Google as well as me!!

I wouldn't know wear to start looking for that info , thanks for that , it would seem that I might just get away with only spending £12.

Cheers.

All Hmmmnz said was they had the same bore & stroke. He didn't say dick about the rings being interchangable, which they won't be.

Ever hear that line about a little knowledge being a dangerous thing? Rolling Eyes

If they had the same bore and ring thickness I'd give it a go.

Stroke is irrelevant.

Thanks Mick , I will see if I can get the shop to measure the thickness (think that's the right word) of one of the rings with vernier caliper's and then I will measure the ones that come out of the bike and fingers crossed see if they are the same. ( I so hope they are, itwould save loads of money Smile )

Jamie. Slightly rewording what I've said, you will have to measure the height and thickness of the rings if that makes sense.

From the arrow to arrow and from the red dot to a dot you can't see but would be directly underneath the red dot you can see. ?

Jamie if you can track down both parts on one site and see if they have
the same part number then go for it other that I would leave it.

I agree and a 0.01 of an inch out and it is way out.
Just not worth it.
The part number should tell you if they are the same.
The arrows on the left should be the thickness of the ring.

lol funny stuff Very Happy
you can all but try jamie, i'd say you'd be very lucky if they did fit.
but you never know Very Happy untill you have a measure.
its a bit of a problem... yamaha never made many twins so trying to find bits for the wee buggers is going to be a problem.
infact the xs250 was the only yamaha with a bore of 55 mm
the next closest has a bore of 56

I would guess that even if both parts were exactly the same they would have diffrent part No's.... Lets face it he's looking at parts from 2 diffrent manufactures.
Often parts that will swop between bikes from the same manufacture will have diffrent part numbers.

The only way to tell would be to measure in all directions, and then if they are the same, compare bits side by side. Looking at stuff like the angles the rings have been cut at.

The depth of the groove isn't that critical so long as the XS has a similar or deeper groove than the CB. The thickness is critical and must be the same. The groove supports both sides of the ring so if the ring isn't a perfect fit it will bend and snap under use. Remember the piston changes direction a couple of hundred times a second and the ring will be dragging on the cylinder wall.

The other thing is that the rings might be of a completely different TYPE. The oil-control rings will probably be different and have different drillings in the piston and the cylinder liners might be of a different material needing a different type of ring too.

The odds on them fitting successfully or lasting any length of time are not good at all.

It might actually be easier to get a whole piston complete with its rings that'll fit.

When people are trying to help you could be a bit more polite, it seems you are only listening for the answers you WANT rather than the truth. If you cant find a piston, then just keep looking,
I am sure you will find one somewhere pal.

If not, is it worth looking for an engine being broken for spares?

Wow, you took an old brit bike apart, painted it, and put it back together again. You obviously are such an expert in motorcycle mechanics and engineering principles Rolling Eyes

How much are the Yamaha rings? It's been about 25 years since I bought a set.. But I still know you can strip, re-ring & assemble the entire top end on a XS250 & have it running again in under a half hour...
