Hi,

I live in France and am looking to set up a 'biking gite' which will be ready for spring next year. Differing for stopping at a hotel or normal holiday cottage, we'll have secure bike storage, accompanied and suggested routes, 24 hour recovery, repair tools, even N02 supply - as well as the usuals such as pool free BBQ with booze etc etc. Price will be not much more than B&B! I have two sites I can develop and would really welcome some feedback on locations. I'd like to know how far people would be willing to travel for a holiday like this. One property we have is in the Pyrenees, don't need to say much about the merits of the roads here but its about 700 miles from Calais, we do this in a oner sometimes or leaving friday night, with a stop over, taking it easy arrive lunchtime sunday. But i wondered if people would see this as too far?Another site is in The Lot (SW France near the DOrdogne) roads are pretty good but not so famed as the Pyrenees - about 5 hours from Calais. As most people are seem to want to spent a week plus weekends either side on a biking holiday I wondered if generally, using 2 days to actually get there would be too much? Any feedback would be a great help.
Best regards
Lou

Hi

We went to the south of France last year on bikes. Well, we took about 8 bikes and 2 cars (carried most of the luggage).

The distance for me was not too bad (on a 1200 Bandit without a fairing), but for others it was a push. We did it easily in 2 days from Calais and that was taking it very easy (the smokers wanted a break every hour or so).

Coming back we did it in a similar time but we spent about 4~5 hours at the space centre in Toulouse, but that was traveling without the smokers!

I would say the Pyrenees are a fair way for many people but maybe the ideal solution to that is to have suggested accomodation about half way, even better if you can book it at the same time.

All the best

Keith
