If you fit an after market exhaust do you have to inform your insurance?

Technically yes as it's a modification to the bike.

When I went to insure my R6 I even had to declare that it was fitted with crash bungs*, aftermarket system, shock etc...

Added £6/year to the policy.

* Although for some reason Bennetts refused to quote due to crash bungs as they don't cover modifications. Laughing

Just the mods thing. You are dealing with idiots when you speak to insurers bots. They Quote Policy but do not thouroughly understand The Company's Policy Manual.

Yes as if you come off or its nicked off the bike the can will not be replaced as it wasn't insured. Also if its increased the power by over 5% they need to be told as it will affect your premium. Thing is, an end can will struggle to increase power by 5% anyway.

I can't remember which insurer it was but they refused to touch my CB250n with an aftermarket Motad exhaust because it gave the bike 2 or maybe 3 extra bhp.

If I'd have crashed on it with the Motad undeclared my insurance would have been null and void.

Wouldn't you be able to just get the bike delivered to your own house and put the original exhaust back on before the assessor comes round to have a look?

Not if it is recovered by a third party on behalf of the Police or something. Then you've got the whole issue of finding an OEM exhaust that hasn't rotted through.

I've had my Akrapovic can on my bike for well over three years (it was fitted not that long after the bike was brand new) and I've never bothered declaring it to any insurers.
