Anyone feel like giving up road riding?

Everytime I hear something about a crash or a death it sticks in my head for a few days even thought I don't even know the people.


I was off a bike for 10 months after a crash as I thought I'd reached my limit. Thankfully I'm back on one, 6 weeks later I'm liking it but I'm not getting the love from road riding that I did previously.

Maybe some nerves, being cautious, who knows but there has been so many crashes and deaths this year it puts me off. I've slowed right down on runs, backing off miles before junctions, trying to judge each bend just in case someone comes out on me (like last night, arctic lorry size didn't see me!! )...

I'm kinda condering selling my bike and getting a track machine only now. I know there is still an element of danger but not as much as the road and as my bike is a toy only, a track bike kinda makes sense just now.


Anyone else suffer these moments when you hear terrible stuff or am I a tad highly strung?!?

I did the ring and then a track day. since then I dont ride half as fast on the road as I used too. (I can still spank born agains on their R1's and blades on my 250 though)

I felt the same after a couple of offs but getting out more and few thousand smooth carefull miles under the belt soon sorted that out and i'm probably riding almost as quick now as I ever have. Riding quick in rideouts is a recipie for disaster though. I only go quick in very small groups or alone.

Mick, heard about your 'antics' cc, I'd say go in for a trackday, or Go-karting, I did it on saturday and I didn't feel the need to go above speed limits on roads for anything(not that I usually do), as the go-kart got my speeding treatment so try different things, and as for the confidence, riding will clear it up, good luck with what ever you decide

Shame you feel like that, more so a shame that's it's probably other peoples driving that causes you to feel like that. End of the day, it's how you feel. If you don't enjoy it, you don't enjoy it. Not taking the piss, but maybe you could consider more of a cruiser, i.e Harley (sorry for the blasphemy fellow sports bikers) , as you will inherently be less tempted to speed (not be able to more like) and therefore feel more in control and safe, and therefore just enjoy the cruise.

I think you got the right idea, if you want ot go fast do it somewhere where its safer. At least on the track there should be no muppets pulling out on you or comming at you....

Just use a road bike for the odd day out or commuting.

It can take a long time to regain the 'confidence'/stupidity you once had after an off.

I like the road much more than track.

Lots of reasons.

1st you never need to book a ride out.

Go at your own pace.

If you still enjoy road but feel you lost the edge.
Speak to IAM. (Some of them are a shower of wankers though. ) Or do track aimed at road. Speak to someone at a track to find out if they do courses like that.

I have arsed down the road a few times and lost it a bit. Crawling round bends and shitting it. It does creat stress and ruins the trip.

Depends on what you want out of biking.

As you say you can still break your neck on a track bike. Hell Forbid.

After my last off I tend to take it more easy nowadays, I pick my times and moments to have fun more carefully now.
Ive never been on a track mind.

There are times and moments I think "Is it really worth it?" but I eventually come back to saying yes.

I must admit i've developed a slightly carte blanche attitude of 'only the good die young' (well its my new answer when people prophesise my death).

Death by my error i can foresee, death by other peoples error id be just as fucked pussy footing along.

What concerns me is my new found numbness to most 'near miss' situations. I just react and forget instantly, which im sure is a bad sign.

But im pretty certain track days whilst fun will feel pretty sterile compared to road. Im pretty certain they kick you off trackdays for wheelies too...

Took me ages to get my confidence back after an off last September.

Couple of weeks ago went to Llandudno made good time there, no probs, loads of fast (for me!) overtakes on the A55, sun shining nice roads, felt great, was dashing back to be home in time for the school run when a bloody big rottwieler (sp?) ran out in front of me on the A41.

Missed it. just, was shaking like a jelly for a few minutes but my speed confidence has been shot.

Back to tootling round the 50-60mph mark again

i'll never give up road riding. My recent, quite nasty, incident has done nothing but reinforce my need to be on a bike. Is it bad that i'm looking forward to the insurance payout so I can buy a bigger, faster bike? Nope.

I think the older you get you are also less careless and maybe think more about others and your life in general.

My mum and girlfriend worry like mad about me having a bike and you've got to consider family feelings I suppose.

Most of these thoughts go out my head once I'm actually on the bike but I just seem more aware of my surroundings.

Maybe I just need to get away out from my normal roads and go places where I don't know and see if I'm still affected.
