am pleased to state that i finally took the plunge and bought a house. But it needs re-wiring, new boiler, kitchen, bathroom and carpets.
Now i can find builders listing from yell, upmystreet etc. but how to ensure the quality or genuinity of there work.
Any thing to watch out for?
Any pointers, much appreciated!

Cheers!

Ask your new neighbours. They may know someone local or even be related to someone who might be able to give you a bit of a discount.

Our neighbour has 3 sons. An electrician, a builder and a plumber. Sorted! Very Happy

I always go on recommendations from work colleagues or friends, ask them for references (you take the risk that they've paid someone off to lie but better then going in blind)
With the replacement boiler - Make sure gas fitters are corgi registered, you can check on their website. British Gas tend to overcharge but the work is guaranteed.
Always worth a google search on the company name in case they crop up in forums.
Thumbs Up

Builders are wank.

Due to the run of sunny weather in Scotland they are all out working.

Try to get one to do a job for you now.......

Do not pay until you are satisfied with the work. Keep some in reserve. If he wont work that way flick hm and get someone else.
Never appear desperate. You will be Raped.....

Be carefull of the dribs an drabs outfits.

A good builder should be able to complete the work without constantly needing more cash or time.

It is not easy to do business with a lot of them.

But they are only trying to make a living. Laughing

I'm starting some work at the house next month. I will post the details and name names any of the accused/guilty parties recormendations.

There are Builder Chat forums out there.
