I will be going away from anywhere between 3/12 months and was wondering what to do with my bike. It will be in the garage and probably have an optimate running. Should I drain the engine or anything? and what should I do when I return?

get some fuel stabiliser
chuck it in the tank run it to get the fuel through, and then leave it.
when you come back drain all the fuel, put new stuff in, and go.
oil should be fine Thumbs Up

Fuel if left long enough can gum up in the carburettor. Is it carb'd?

1. Turn fuel off at tap. Drain carb. Usually there is a drain screw in the bottom of the float chamber bowl.
2. Remove spark plug(s) and put about 1 teaspoon of oil into (each) cylinder. refit spark plugs and turn the engine over a couple of times.
3. Disconnect battery or as you have one, put it on trickle charge.
4. If the oil is due a change, change it either before you store it or before you next ride it. Oil should really be changed every 12 months regardless of miles.
5. Drain and refill tank with fresh fuel after storage.

The above isn't detrimental to do, just a good guide - actually says it in the owners handbook on my bike and petrol lawnmower. Very Happy

Having said that, I put an '84 Honda CM200 back on the road after 10years of being stood and nothing had been done to that before it was stored. Had clean out the carb, very caked up. Got a new battery, changed the oil and got new tyres - started first time!! But wouldn't idle due to a blocked idle jet. Runs sweet now.

mrbluesbox, RTFP (Read The Fukin' Post) Laughing
He said optimate Karma

The bike will be fine.
You will be rusty.

Take a little time to get used to riding the bike again.

Wait till you get it into 2nd before wringin' the f'ckers neck Laughing

Honestly allow time for your muscle and joints to revive their communication abilities etc.

Yamaha sell a fuel additive I use in my bike every other month.
Fuel injected or carbs.

You could be really picky and pump about 15 PSI extra air in the tyres to keep them from 'setting'. You can get a bump in them if left to long. Sad

It's FI so no probs there, I'll add the extra pressure to the tires, I'll try to convince my dad to give her a run out. Every now and then. I'll probably be abit dodgy when I get back but I should be riding, I'm going to the far east, and there are lots of mopeds etc. for hire in the cities.

As suggested, drain the carbs etc. Also try and get the bike off the ground if you can. Either up on a centre or paddock stand with a few bricks under the forks. (obviously with something padding them). Keep the weight off the tyres and stop them setting.
