'Your MRI scan showed some spondylitic change in the neck and a disc protruding in your cervical spine number 5 and 6 causing irritation of the nerve roots. You will be reviewed in the clinic.'

All very well but my appointment is February 2008 Shocked

I don't understand a word of it, earliest appointment with my GP is next week Rolling Eyes

Please could anyone tell me what this means (was caused by getting knocked off my bike by a van if that helps?)

Without being a medical person it sounds like you have a slipped disc between youe 5th and 6th vertebra rubbing against the spinal chord.

It basically means that there is some damage/change in the vertebrae in the neck and the disc is protruding into one of the nerves thus causing pain, inflammation and irritation. I'd presume that it's not an "urgent" case as such, so don't worry about it too much (easier said than done I know). I have a spinal condition lower in the back and have spent a fair amount of time in clinics and suchlike over the last few years, in fairness to the NHS if the condition is even vaguely worrying then you get bounced straight in to see a specialist, it's why run of the mill and non-threatening conditions tend to wait a bit longer I'd guess.

Hope it's not too painful, and good luck with the NHS merry-go-round.

Make an apointment with your GP **TODAY** and have them explain the mumbo jumbo.

The medical profession are assholes like garages.
They think its smart to baffle you with their damn science. Laughing

You should look at suitable exercise, diet and rest etc.

Medication for symptoms and any discomfort and posible corrective treatment may be prescribed.

DO NOT LET OUR NHS fuck you around. DEMAND to have them assist you.
(I love to give them it.......)

Oh and get well soon.

Tarmacsurfer Thumbs Up

Spondylitic - in relation to spondyle. A spondyle is a vertabra.
Your vertabra has moved.

You have a slipped disc which is rubbing against your nerves. There's not a great deal that can be done to treat it and your comfort will come from good self management. You have to be the 'expert' in this kind of situation. Be careful with your back, try to sit straight, be very careful lifting things and do what you can to strengthen your back.

If it was urgent you would be referred straight to a specialist. I suspect your GP will recommend a physio referral, but again because this isn't an urgent case you could be waiting up to 6 months (it should be less than 4 and a half months).

Look after yourself and don't be afraid to take painkillers, but try to avoid it. I find it's better to 'feel' when you've done something wrong to your back so you can avoid it next time Very Happy

Thanks peeps Thumbs Up

Annabella I'm with you about the painkillers don't like taking them.

Much prefer to self-medicate with red wine, a couple of glasses takes the edge off nicely.

Spoke to my physio this afternoon but she will only continue treatment with the GP's approval.

Wanted to get the medical claim finished before February, but shall have to wait and see now.

Before I had the scan the settlement figure offered was £2300 (purely medical settled for leathers, excess etc seperately) anyone had similar injuries and how much did you get? (if that isn't a rude question, not out to fleece them but don't want to get ripped off)

Tell them to whistle. I got more than that for a twisted ankle.

You should be looking at more than that I'd imagine. Make a point of jotting down every way in which the injury affects your lifestyle. It's also likely to be a permanent injury which you will continue to suffer from.

I've been keeping a diary of how my injury is affecting both mine and my girlfriends lifestyle. I've not ridden my bike for about 10 weeks now. I tried my helmet on the other day and I was a bit freaked out with the amount my vision is restricted. I'm ok driving the car, but i'm worried about cars pulling out on me on my bike.
I wonder how much that will affect my claim if I have to give up riding. Crying or Very sad
