At circa $300/day.... Shocked

I'd be better off buying a bike there and then selling it. Laughing

Any comments?

I toured NZ on a 50cc moped with some mates Mr. Green
payed about 600 bucks I think and sold it for about the same.

60KPH with the wind behind you, Rock on!!

Although I'm sure you'd rather tour on a real bike, we met some guys on hired Suzuki V-storms I think they said they paid $1500 but I'm not sure if that was for 1 or 2 weeks hire.

If you do buy a bike to sell again I think I remember prices being cheaper on the south island, I'd expect that you'd get a better price selling in Auckland as everything seems to be a bit more expensive up there.

Toured in a car. Paid £450 for it and sold it for the same 3 months later. Depends on how long you plan on being there really, will you have the time at the end of the trip to sell it again?

No buy and sell not really an option.
It's just that it seems so damned expensive £90/day.
I could get terms on a new bike for that....
I will probably have to bite the bullet but just tour S Island for a week before heading Norf.

I bought a car, toured in it for three months and sold it for the same as I bought it. It's the best way if you can do it.

Whatever way you do it, be careful. People in New Zealand drove very quickly when I was there. Also, the roads ( major routes) are sometimes very narrow with poor surfaces in the south island.

It's well worth going.

Haven't done it, but was checking prices earlier, and for $100NZ a day you can get a fully kitted XT600. Might be more appropriate for NZ than a full on tourer?

ive only hired a bike once and that was from Christchurch when i was down in wanaka for a season, i was having withdrawals.
around $100 a day (£30) and prices drop according to how long you hire for.
dont hire a road bike, they just arnt practical. with nz having a huge number of dirt roads, and the option of riding nearly everywhere off road. it would just be silly to not have a dirt bike. Very Happy
bike prices are quite expensive in nz, and if you were o buy one, you would almost defenitly get your money back.
go on www.trademe.co.nz (nz version of ebay) and see if you can buy one before you go. but if you are only going for a couple of weeks then its pointless (you really need at least a month in nz to really get to see it) the south island alone is about the size of the uk. with so much to see and do i think you'll run out of time.
ill see if i can find the guy i hired the bike from in Christchurch and send you a link

insurance??? wtf is that? no insurance needed in new zealand.
as long as it has a wof (warrant of fitness (mot)) and is registered (taxed) thats all you need.

Its pretty crazy isn't it, I'm not sure if you can claim off of the government or something if your hit by somebody with no insurance.
Most people with newish cars tend to be fully comp anyway.

Remember the give way to people turning right infront of you rule, thats a funny one to get your head around to start with.

gotta remember there is only 3.5 million people in the whole of nz
and of that only 1million in the south island
1.5 million in auckland and another million around the rest of the north island.
so not to many people to crash into Very Happy
i have only ever had insurance once and that was my very first car when i was 15.

oh yeah dont get that left hand rule wrong. people in nz get very fucked off with that eg
https://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g257/hmmmnz/right.jpg
the red car has the right of way if the blue car is also turning left
its a courtesy law Very Happy and a good one in my books.
there is nothing worse sitting waiting to turn right holding up every one behind you waiting for a gap to get through and some one just shoots into the road you want to go in Very Happy
