I'm wondering about the laws on tinted visors. Would i be right in saying that you are now aloud them on sunny days? or as long as you are carrying a clear visor?

Also does the law on how tinted it is come into play? I've just ordered this one:

https://visorshop.com/takachi_x_black_visor_107294_visors_2.html

It looks really heavily tinted, wondering if i'm going to have problems. Guess it's too late if it is going to be Laughing .

Thanks, Jack

You are allowed a slight tint but it is useless.
You could be pulled for using dark ones.
But usual to only be given a warning.
Tints at night is shite as you just can't see.
Might make it careless/dangerous driving and give you a producer.
Mirror Coatings be carefull.

Carry a spare and you can change it if asked.

It is allways better to order and pay for something you will not be able to use then ask on the internet if it's OK. Embarassed Laughing

Is the law any different when it comes to goggles?

I've just ordered another pair of Oakley goggles (I already have one clear pair), this time with a slight blue tint. Oakley's website says they let through 56% of light - is this legal?

It would seem strange if you're not allowed to wear tinted goggles when sunglasses are fine.

I thought they'd changed it and made even black ones legal now?
I wear a mirror visor and no cops have pulled me over or anything.

ACPO guidelines are currently that black visors are well on the back burner so far as making an issue of them is concerned.

Hi

Laws are very similar for goggles. Think 50% light transmission is the minimum, but that is only a very mild tint in reality.

The visor must transmit enough light and must be suitably marked. Currently the ACPO are saying that it is recommended to ignore tinted visors in reasoable conditions, but the copper on the ground is perfectly at liberty to do you for it whatever the ACPO say.

All the best

Keith

Visors must comply with BS4110 XA, YA or ZA and must allow at least 50% ambient light to pass through, and this ambient light measurement for the purpose of the law is taken when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, namely midday.

Black visors only allow 18% ambient light to pass through, and despite the efforts of me and my colleagues on the BSI visor committee, and despite the recomendations of BSI, the then transport minister David Jamieson decided to listen to the likes of the Pedestrians Association who thought it was for show only, and despite the reports submitted showing that black visors were a safety attribute, the research which was employed independently was flawed and we lost the day.

Additionaly, it was felt by the dickhead of a minister that if 1% of riders wore their black visors during periods of darkness, it would be unacceptable, even though we wrote up the new proposed legislation where we made it easy to enforce by making it an offence to wear a black visor during lighting up times, namely as soon as headlights were required, then so would a clear visor. This was still rejected.

However, goggles are not affected by the same legislation and are allowed to be 82% tinted and be legal onthe road which is where the government argument fell down, but despite this we still lost, although we are still trying to bring pressure to bear.

In bright weather, most coppers who ride a bike will themselves recognise the safety benefits, and many of my former friends and colleagues themselves wear black visors on the job bike, and I still have my old service helmet as a momento, still fitted with the black visor I was wearing on my last day of service.

The Police are also aware that although they have the authority to confiscate visors for evidential purposes, they and their force leave themselves open for litigation if injury is caused through having no protective eye covering, and so whilst it is a potential can of worms, provided it is used sensibly, black visors will be left alone.

I read somewhere (T'Internet Embarassed ) that even wearing sunglasses under the visor is restricted..

I am always wrong though.
Would look it up but too busy today.

There are no regulations regarding the wearing of sunglasses under your helmet, although there are regulations regarding the amount of UV they are allowed to let in, however that is a manufacturers problem not the end users concern.

However, once you have seen someones brain perferated by the arm of the sunglasses entering the skull through the nose straight into the brain, or a few pairs of sunglasses embedded into someones eyes, it put me off ever wearing them, hence the reason I wear a black visor Embarassed

Likewise, if you are wearing a legal tint visor, it is still perfectly legal to wear it during the hours of darkness. Not recommended, but legal! Rolling Eyes
