I'm considering applying for a job, and i have absolutely no idea what makes a good CV. Is there anyone with a profession that deals with CVs on a regular basis and knows what makes a good one?

Input most appreciated Thumbs Up Karma

It depends on what job you are going for, what skills you have etc. A City based CV will be very different both in layout and in content to a Mechanics CV.
PM or email me and i'll run through it with you on msn.

I'm using this guide produced by my university to write mine. It has some good examples of CV's down at the bottom of the page.

An important thing about a CV in my opinion is once you have done it and I recommend you word process it, is to update it whenever any of your employment details or personal details changed. This way you always have a current CV at hand. Thumbs Up

Try to keep it to a maximum of two sides of A4, and if you are posting a copy, print it off double sided so there is only one sheet of paper.

*edit*

Just read that guidance, and it says "make sure your email address is sensible". Every interview I have been to, they have commented on my speedingpenguin email address, it's broken the ice and amused them (and I got the job both times...) so take that comment with a pinch of salt Smile

I keep my personal details (age, location etc) at the bottom, so they are the last thing they read.

If someone has an age limit (unofficially of course) or would prefer to find someone relatively locally, then you might find your CV in the bin before they've read it.

If you have all that at the bottom, then they might decide they like you before they realise you're a bit older/younger/further away than they'd like, but knowing what they've read, will give you a chance.

My overall format is something like this....
Quote:

Primary Skills
- bullet pointed list of your top skills
Secondary Skills
- another bullet pointed list of your less strong, but still relevanmt skillset

Work Experience
Most recent job first
timeframe
Company
Position
Description of what you did, and also the reason you left if possible.

education
most recent quals first. if you've been to uni, then don't bother with your School quals.

additional personal experience
other stuff uyou've done that's relevant to the position, but isn't directly related to your job or education, eg clubs youre involved in (i'm the foudner of the MySQL user group for example, which is relevant for my position as a DBA)
include other positions of responsibility eg club or society committe positions, things you've organised etc.

otehr relevant info

Driving licence
languages
Stuf that they might like to know

leisure activities
don't just put reading, cinema and socialising.. DO something..
Equally, don['t bullshit. I know of someone who put windsurfing down cos they thoght it sounded cool, only to be interviewd by someonme who used to be a pro. pwned.

personal info
what it says on the tin, age, contact details etc

references available on request
Don't include them, just tell them you can provide them

If this is your first "proper" job since leaving education, and you dont have specific career history that is relevanmt to the position, then I'd have education first.
