...on the way home, wouldn't normally mention it but I was in the outside lane of the M5 doing 86mph at the time. Interestingly I'd been keeping an eye on the gauge as it had dipped a bit, and I was waiting for the red light. No such thing, a cough, a splutter and before I got my hand to the knob I'm doing 53mph and trying to navigate to the hard shoulder. I must admit all the car drivers were really curteous, apart from the guy behind me in the middle-lane who really didn't get the situation quickly enough. Anyway after switching to "prime" and then "reserve" I was on my way again, bit disappointed as I was only a mile from the junction. I really must stop raggin' it quite so much... just thought I'd share. Smile

Unlucky , at least you have a reserve , remember now that you have filled up to put it back to main otherwise if you run out again you will be screwed.

Must have been very exciting. I often get a boner riding but never actual reach down for my nob.

Cheers 'J' I did it as I was sitting in the queue at the petrol station, I'm gonna take it a bit easier from now on.

I was surprisingly calm about it, but rather shocked to find how quickly speed decreases when you just stop the engine, and I've never had a hard-on when riding yet, except that one time I was pillon... Shifty

I get a lob on more often than not on long rides on the bike, the problem occurs when you have to put it back in your leathers with gloves on...

Ive ran onto reserve once or twice on the CBR. unfortunately it doesn't have a Prime setting, So if you do run out and run on for too long "spluttering" it runs the carb bowls dry, Then your fucked because the battery doesn't have enough puff to crank it over enough times to get the carb bowls full again. (as I found out and found myself bump starting the cunt).

It's not running out of petrol unless you end up walking back from a garage with a plastic petrol can you just bought in your hand... Embarassed

Good point, and I obviously wasn't calm enough to think of that... Doh!

The reserve works, and once I get used to the position etc... I suppose I'll be okay. On my 125 I used to flick it to reserve without a moments thought, with hindsight I should just have stuck it on reserve when I left work I knew that I was down to 1/4 tank then, but we live and learn. Wink

Happened to me on Sunday on the M11. Reached down to flip to reserve and got my glove caught in the fuel tap mechanism.

That was interesting

I ran out of petrol on my first commute to work (45 miles, and didn't have breakdown cover then) after getting my bike. I just felt the engine flutter, and then lost power. Shit myself (figuratively speaking) in all the commotion, and only realised I was out of petrol when I had a calm moment to think on the hard shoulder.

It was my first tank-full of fuel; I have no fuel-gauge, nor even a trip dial, so I was really clueless as to how far I was going to get. Luckily, though, I switched on my sat-nav, and found there was a petrol station a mile away (and I still had my reserve).

It isn't nice, but it probably happens to everyone at one point.

That reminds me of the time when I still had my TZR250 (which has been passed around BCF members and currently resides with Kickstart, I think!)
I ran out of fuel, so confidently reached down to turn the tap to reserve, but it still wouldn't run. After a bit of attempted bump starting and cursing I had to call Andy to get me some fuel.
On closer inspection, some idiot had swapped the main and reserve lines over so when I thought I was running low I'd actually run out - how annoying was that?!
Looking on the bright side, at least I knew exactly what the tank range was as I'd filled it up when I bought it!

Never ran out of fuel on a bike.

However, I do have quite a funny story about running out in one of my old cars - my first Cavalier. I was about a mile away from the nearest petrol station. I used to run the car on Veggie oil, and remembered that I had a full container of used motor oil in the back. Shoved that in, along with a bit of petrol to thin it out...

Ran like a dog, but suprisingly made it to the petrol station!

The switch to turn my bike onto reserve is extremely hard to twist, you have to take your gloves off and be at a stand still!

I always used to leave the fuel tap on reserve on my VFR, ran out so many times, had to walk a mile and back to get fuel once. Not much, but longest mile of my life. Also had to call sister out at stupid o clock in the morning to bring fuel, ah well Smile

I have a bad habit of leaving the reserve tap on. Luckily the last time I apparently ran out of fuel, I was able to get it started again for a short while with the bike (883 Sportster) only running out as it glided to a halt beside a fuel pump at the garage.
