Looking to buy a 125cc but not sure on what one...

I have a few bikes in mind and i really wanted the new red model of the Aprilia RS but it's £3200, i don't really like the old model and all my mates have it so it's pretty common and would look like clones.

I like:

Honda Shadow
cagiva planet/raptor (they look the same)
Aprilia RS
Derbi GPR 125


Out of the ones i've seen and i'd want to buy a 125 for speed really because i used to own a cruiser for about 2 months. However i love the seating position on it but the bike wud struggle after 50mph lol and it just was sooo slow and boring. I've heard the Derbi is pretty fast but i don't know much about it and how it compared to the Aprilia RS.

My budget however is about £2400 max.


I'll add that i'm 19 and 6" if that helps with insurance or like riding position.

Get a Caiva Mito. It's the only one that can really touch the RS on speed. Ducati 916 look-a-like.

I would say the honda shadow, well build 4 stroke and reliable.
But if your really tall then go with Rs of cagiva as the shadow would be a bit low for you.

For £3200 do your test and get a real bike

OI 125's are real bikes there babies and cute. but if he has that much money to dispose of then do your test and dont me like me and broke and stuck with a jap bike.

IMO you should do your test for £500 (intensive course) and get a restricted 500/Bandit/Fazer/Hornet and have about £800 left for your insurance

How much experiance you got? maybe best to stay on a 125 until you get more practice instead of jumping into test.

Whilst I'm pleased that I bought a 125 to give me a bit more road experiance, I actually wish I'd have had it for a few months then gone straight in for my test, the problem I have at the moment is all my money is tied up in the house so I'm stuck on a 125 that I feel I've outgrown...Hopefully not for much longer though...

So following on from Tobys post I'd say buy something cheap and cheerfull, use it for a few months to gain some experiance then do your test and move onwards and upwards...

I dunno i don't feel ready to go and do my test and i've been on like a 600cc and it's scary as hell in terms of power lol. Think i'm kool with a 125 for another year of so and then go do my test or w/e.

If you have riding experience under your belt and plenty of cash, it would make sense to do your test before choosing and buying a bike. You will then have a much broader range to choose from, bikes that are similar to 125's but are a much better all round package. However if you are happy with the 125 and want to stay on a provisional for now, I like the cagiva 125 super city.

Being 6,4 i tried a few different bikes out in the 125 cat, but the one i felt most comfortable with, for size was my Honda NSR. Now i havent seen it mentioned here but if your looking for a sporty(ish) 125 thats a good looker, its definitely one to look at. Ive found (personally) that its reliable, parts are cheap and easy to get hold of, fuel consumption is pretty decent and insurance wasnt too bad. The riding position can be slightly uncomfortable on longer journeys due to the strain on the wrists but its not that bad once you get used to it. My only bad points with the NSR (if i can call them such) are the weight and the fact that it turns like a bus. Apart from that ive been very happy with it and im glad i didnt go with the RS125 as i was planning to as it seems everyone and his dog owns one lol. I really like it and seems in good condition, obviously have to check history and look at the bike closer. Just i love the colour and shape, i'll have to mod that horrible back seat though.

mate, you know you'll end up with the RS125. It's the only choice. Mito's are cool, but far more unreliable than the RS. Don't listen to all the big men out there telling you to get a real bike, like you said RS is more than enough and plenty fun. The Derbi's i believe are owned by Piaggio who own Aprilia so they might be similar, not entirely sure. personally I like the older shape, more curved and old skool looking. A second hand one with few miles owned by someone 20+ would be your best bet. Keep us up to date with what you get, enjoy LOL LOL (what the heck does LOL mean anyway )

It's just sooo hard to chose a RS cause i don't trust private buyers :\ That white one i like has been un restricted and last engine change 8000 miles ago. Basically i'll buy it and one month later it'll go bang. So it'll cost me a new engine and to restrict it :\

Is in great condition tho lol.

I'm thinking of getting a cbr 125 for my first bike...It looks ok for a first and sounds reliable. Thats all I really need at 16 years old until I can take my test. But if I where you I wouldnt waste my time with buying an expensive 125.

Buy a cheap 125. When your confident about passing your test, take it. Sell the 125. Buy a real bike
