Where do bikes stand when it comes to pay and display?

I presume double yellow lines and disabled side-of-the-road parking is a no?

Not allowed to park on the pavement are you?

Parking regs apply to all vehicles, and although the yellow lines are painted on the side of the road, the regs extend from wall to wall or verge to verge.

park on the pavement and you risk having your bike removed or at the least being done for obstruction on top of any breach of parking regs.

Usually where park and display is in force there is usually a motorcycle bay for this very reason. It may mean walking a little further but it does avoid predictable consequences.

Many of the parking restrictions around the UK are unlawfull inthat they fail to conform to the regs in place.

For example if there are no termination lines, or the lines are hand painted, the regs cannot be enforced lawfully. The lines and signs frequently fail to comply with the traffic order, again unlawfull, and the biggest problem is that the lines do not comply with the distances laid down in the regs simply because many of the workmen who put down the lines feel that being a couple of meteres out is close enough and cannot be bothered to follow the engineers instructions.

A trip to your local library can often be quite enlightning and can often result in you parking somewhere far more convenient without other vehicles to get in the way, and the parking attendants are stuffed because it is unlawfull.

You just need to be prepared to have a bit of a fight with them sometimes, but it can be beneficial. Wink

Another one I've come across for yellow lines is that they must be continuous. So if broken by wear and tear or had a tarmac patch over them then the whole line is invalid.

FWIW a disposable camera is useful to carry around for proof. Arguement is digital can be manipulated but with disposables (even if put straight onto CD for convenience) you still have negatives.

Not strictly true, it has to be proven that the line was not contiuous in the first place, and wear and tear does not count, however a tarmac patch has been argued to contravene these rules, but the jury is still out at the moment.

Absolutely, Thumbs Up and if you look at my thread regarding the accident checklist you will see that I recommend the carrying of a camera whether it be disposable, phone or digital as they can provide evidence that words can't.

The argument about digitals was thrown out a long time ago, and now all photographic evidence (well 99% anyway) is digital. It simply requires a statement confirming by whom, when and where it was taken and then only in cases which are contested and that is perfectly admissable.

Depends on where you are. Pay and display not required in motorcycle parking bays in Leicester and Nottingham, even if other vehicles in the same street are required to pay and display - this is from a traffic warden giving out tickets.

Nottingham and Leicester authorities wont take any notice of a bike parked on the pavement as long as it is obstructive. I quite often park up using the cycle stands in town because its something solid for me to lock the bike to.

Using the smae logic I park the Trike in Motorcycle bays because it is a MOTOR triCYCLE. There is only one bay in leicester that is not valid in.

Pay and display carparks in Leicester require you to put your registration number on the ticket to try and prevent theft - they also like you to park where they can keep an eye on it.

Well in a Pay & Display, if you park in a normal space expect to pay for it, often there are area's where cars cannot fit that you can put a bike into. Whether you need to pay or not is a very grey area. It could depend on the guy walking round and what sort of day he has had. So long as you are not causing ANY sort of obstruction you should be OK. If in doubt ask....

Where are you supposed to stick the parking ticket though? couldn't someone just take it off if you put it on the screen?

I dont really like parking up because there never seems to be anything to chain my bike to. I tend to just go out for a ride and come back. But when I have parked I use the motorcycle specific bay and usually the sign on the car park that displays the charges states that bikes can park for free provided they are in the designated bike area.

My dad got a parking ticket for parking outside heron house in Manchester. He's parked there since 2001 and never had a problem. The government are always trying to persuade people to move from 4 to 2 wheels to stop congestion yet they still want to make money from parking tickets. I personally think it is ridiculous, motorcycles should be able to park wherever they want as long as it's suitable.

I was refering to national rules rather than any local scheme or exemption Wink

Regardless of location, ANY council park is free for bikes, withut a ticket. However private parks such as "NCP" are not, they incur their own costs. Parking on-street/in bicycle bays/yellow lines are not allowed although you can park in a residential bay for free anytime as long as you park 90 degrees to the kerb. Also, anytime being unless stated other wise on a sign.

Pay and display areas - read the machine. The ones around my old work specified that bikes were free.

Don't know about the rest of the country, but in London you pay.

Again, in London, parking in a residents' bay without a valid permit can cost you up to £100. Bikes can park in residents' bays in Hammersmith & Fulham, but in the next street, in Kensington & Chelsea jurisdiction, you'll be charged £100 should you make that assumption.

Sadly, London parking is a minefield with each council imposing their own regulations, which are not advertised anywhere, except perhaps on their websites.

As for P&D tickets: write on it your licence plate number and 'motorcycle', that way cars & other bikes can't display it. Make a note of the issue number, and if you've got a camera phone, take a picture of it attached to your bike (bulldog clips are quite handy for attaching it to e.g., your fuel tank flap). So, when it does get removed by a vandal or the wind, you have something to appeal with.

Don't know if it's been mentioned above as I haven't read the whole thread, but I read in a magazine last year that if you've got a main stand and it's on the pavement with neither wheel touching the pavement then they can't touch you...

Wouldn't like to try it though tbh...

Urban myth and total bollocks!

The vehicle is on a road regardless of whether the wheels are on the ground or otherwise, and it will get removed fopr causing an obstruction just the same as any other vehicle.

Likewise the myth that a covered reg plate cannot be uncovered to reveal the identity is just that a myth.

Any authorised person can take whatever steps are reasonable to obtain the identity of any vehicle which includes bikes.

I managed to find the bike bay at one of the 2 car parks in town today, may look for a ticket guy and ask him what to do at the other

Cheers for all the advice

After getting a ticket in Canterbury, I've now taken to phoning up "Parking Services" in which ever car park, just to clarify, often recording the conversation too. I think you're supposed to notify the other person if the conversation's being recorded, but obviously, most offices these days record it for you anyway! Thumbs Up

I know they say that's motorcycles can be an obstruction but so could a push bike or a pram and you won't get a parking ticket for that. They still take up a lot less space than cars do so whats the problem.

I asked a ticket officer guy today - he said they don't enforce anything on bike parking unless you park on double yellows

Hi all

Have to agree with Paivi

Parking in london is a case of eyes and ears.
See where others park and ask why
Ask and listen to others and learn why.

I Park in city of london, Bikebays full so wander around looking for somewhere to park.
Spot bikes parked in resident bays a few streets away, ask other biker , yep ok to park! Hackney same as hammersmith
(enlightened transport borough). happy days.

So don't take it for granted in London you CAN park, but also it don't mean you Can't !!

Regards
Porter
