Hi,

On my bike, next to the speedo metre, milage clock etc there is a temperature control area. Mine is always on H (Hot) Sorry to be a noob, but could someone tell me why that is lol.

Ive thought about it and think it could be that i need to buy coolant. But not really sure.

Thankyou in advance.

Telling us what bike it is would be a good start! How old is the bike?

Well if you don't shack the bike or let the cooling system settle when you are filling it from empty you can get airlocks in it which mean that it's not water all the way around so it'll run hotter.

MS paint diagram to follow.

Ok i see. In my cooling system there seems to be some sort of liquid already in there. Shall i just buy the correct Coolant and add into my bike. Then wait?

Check levels of the coolant and the oil.

Not sure about exactly how the Gilera is set up - but it should be easy enough to check.

On most of the watercooled Hondas I've ridden there has been a little resevour that with the minimum and maximum marks.

The procedure for oil is easy enough - just run the engine to warm then shut it off and then check the dipstick or the oil window in the crank casing (depending on which the Gilera has) - again it should be somewhere between the minimum and the maximum line

A quick note on chemical coolants - some of them react with others so if you are topping it off and aren't sure what fluid is in it already drain the lot or just top it off with distilled water.

I used to have a Silver gilera runner, 2002 model aswell, the coolant cap is on the right hand side, opposite to the petrol flap. Take the badge off the front, underneath is a screw, remove the screw and take the front middle panel off, you should be able to check you coolant from there, it should be anywhere between the min/max line.

Ok, so basically the reason why my bike is always hot is because of the lack of coolant. GREAT. At least i know its nothing sereous.

Thanks for all yourhelp.

So i can either buy some coolant. Or if im not sure what liquid is in there already (Which idont) then use distilled water?.

thanks

If youre not sure what youre doing, get down your local bike shop, and get some premix coolant. Easiest way. Bung it in, but make sure the engines cold when you do put it in, helps it to mix.

If you aren't going to drain the cooling system down and don't know what coolant has been used in it then you can't go wrong with distilled water.

Oh and the chemical coolant? It's one of those nasty substances that we are supposed to take to the tip rather than get rid of downt he drain. Thumbs Up

Hi all again,

Ive empted the coolant tank becasue i wasnt sure what was in there. And then added new Coolant. However the temperature gauge still says H.

Any reason why this could be? The man at the bike shop said that it could be that the sensor is broken and the bike is probably cool. Or it needs Bleeding?

Any help would be very greatful thankyou!

Bleeding it will get rid of any air in the system, this will definatley help. As far as I know there will be a little screw on top of the radiator, start the bike and loosen the screw slightly until a bit of fluid comes out, then tighten

if your bike is hot it may come out as steam, or very hot water...

Dont put your face over it, and wear protective heat proof gloves if you have them handy.

If not a towel over the screw when loosening it stops any spitting

Check your brakes and bearings, if the wheels have resistance on them, 50's tend to use a lot more power to do anything, and therefore overheat.
