Hi all, I'm very interested in buying a new SV650Sport (fully faired model). I called my local dealer (Daytona in Ruislip)& the dealer said they've "not got any plans to put one out as a demo bike at the moment" not sure whether thats a "let me see your money first" or "find somewhere else".
When I asked if they had one in the showroom I could come & have a look at he replied "um...yes...I think I'm sure we've got one". Talk about vague!

So can anyone who has an SV650 particularly the new 70hp version give me any idea what it's like before I spend my money?
I've only seen the older version up close & it looks taller than my Kawasaki GPZ500S which is good because the GPZ is far too small for me.

I'm not looking for anything blisteringly quick (like the GSX-R600) as I've only been riding 1 year but I've certainly outgrown my GPZ & even my wife complains how slow it is when she's pillion (& she only weighs 55kg!)
The GPZ is starting to need work doing so I feel it's time to change!

Are there any mechanical issues that regularly come up with SV650? E.g. Yam R6 sometimes has problems with 2nd gear, etc?
I'd rather not be paying a fortune everytime the SV goes in for a service!

Any advice would be much appreciated Very Happy

If you are buying a brand new one it'll be ok. They don't really have any problems, the rear brake tends to bind quite a lot, but that's about it. If you're buying a second hand one check for low speed drops and because it's a popular one for new riders look for rounded bolts and poorly adjusted chains etc.

The rear shock goes off pretty quickly and the front cylinder can start misfiring in the wet because it gets covered in crap from the front wheel. Fitting a fenda extenda cures it.

Sounds good with a full system/can.

More as I think of it.

No, just very thin and tall(5ft 9")!
Surprisingly hard to get biking clothes for too, all the stuff that fits her waist is too short for her legs!
I keep trying to fatten her up but she never puts on weight, no matter how much she eats!
Wish i was the same!

Just coat everything she eats in a brushing of melted lard

Sorted

my misses weighs about the same and is just as short

can't do the lard coating thing - she is a veggie - I will look at which make of leathers she has as they fit her quite well - might be worth a try for yours.

I bought a brand new Sv650 last year. Not an experience I will be repeating!!

Bike was generally ok for pootling about but if you ever got in the mood for a good blast it felt awful through the bends at pace.

Build quality is as the price suggests 'budget' as is the suspension and fittings.

Sound good with a can, easy enough to ride but once the new bike feeling has wore off its a bit bland and you feel like your missing out on something.

If you must get one then try and get a second hand 06 model with some warranty left on it rather than lose cash on a brand spanker!

As far as I was aware, the main difference to previous models is the lower fairings, which can be purchased as an aftermarket-option for older older ones as well.

If you're wanting to 'use' an SV at all, I'd definitely consider aftermarket suspension, which will change it to be a bike that can keep up with sports bikes and not feel out of shape.

I hate to say it, but had you considered something like a firestorm? While not great suspension-wise these are a bit better. Ok, it's a litre bike, but they aren't blisteringly fast compared to decent litre bikes and it only goes as fast as you make it - also it will feel like a decent 'upgrade' to the GPZ, which I'm not sure the SV will.
Also maybe consider a VFR750/800, Aprilia Falco, etc?

Veggie that wears leather Shocked hipocrit Laughing

Try the Triumph Speed Four, Great bikes for the price, good to insure and fairly quick 98bhp and 170kg. The suspention is fully ajustable, and the bike is known for being an excellent handler

Sorry, how does not eating meat affect what you should wear? Fair enough if she was to eat the jacket, but she's wearing it. Rolling Eyes

Is there not any other difference between the 2006 & 2007 models?
There was an article written by someone at MCN (i think) saying how he entered the bike in 2 races (Sound of Thunder & another race) came 3rd & 1st.
Have they improved the handling on the 2007 model?

How much would I expect to pay to upgrade the front & rear suspension?

I'm only 23 & with only 1 year NCD a ZX6R is a bit steep to insure at the moment. Hopefully the SV650 will last me a couple of years until I'm 25 & can insure a true superbike!

If you look for an older zx6 or similar and call around a bit, I think you might be surprised at how cheap you can get the insurance.

For the SV, luckily they're quite popular for racing in the UK, so there's plenty of bits floating around. Second hand, maybe £300 for a shock, though I'm told if you know the right people you can get them for not much more than that new. Maybe £200 to get your forks fairly decent sorted, including setup.
It's definitely important to get someone that knows what they are doing to set it up.

I'm afraid that if it was me and I was looking to buy a new bike I couldn't justify having to upgrade the suspension, I'd look elsewhere.

In fact I'd look at a CBR600F, it sounds like it would do everything you are after.

great bike, i got mine straight after passing my test (jumped from 125) and have to say its confidence inspiring around corners, and if kept below 9-10k its very easy to ride and quite laid back, yet at the same time open it up and youl be changing boxers Laughing
got a good condition 37k one including insurance for £1550! you wont look back, strangely enough i really wanted an sv650 aswell, but now im so glad i didnt.
