given that some policies have 3rd - party extension allowing you to supposedly ride insured on other bikes, what happens if you get pulled over? i remember i got pulled on the moped once (forgot to indicate left off a main road into a b road Rolling Eyes and the copped did a check on my bike to make sure my name was in the NID (national insurance database). can you get nicked if you aren't registered as insured? Confused

Hi, 8 points for riding uninsured against 3rd party risks.

If you have cover for 3rd party on any vehicle providing you have the licence to do so, then check your policy wording carefully, some require the vehicle to be insurance, others don't. Also, don't forget, that as soon as you get off the vehicle, it's uninsured, so it will be illegal to park it unless on private ground. Smile

Don't be a divvy, if he's got a TPO extension he will get a HORT1 and all will be fine when he takes his documents in showing that he is entitled to ride other bikes.

They don't check you, they check there is an insurance policy on the bikes registration number. I know this because I had a bike insured on the frame number and was stopped by a copper who said there was no insurance registered for my vehicle (that's why he stopped me).

Those 3rd party insurance on other vehicles bits stipulate that the vehicle must already be covered by another insurance policy. So broadly speaking, if it's on the road it must be specifically covered by an insurance policy. There are exceptions to this but not many.

Just to add to that Stinky, my Mrs has insurance that covers her for any vehicle as long as she has a license for it, the vehicle doesn't need cover itself. (Going to be fun with ANPR!)

Mine certainly doesn't - not the bike nor the car. I've checked the policy wording every year for the last five years or more and none of them have stipulated that it must be covered by another policy. I've quoted the policy wording directly on this forum before. That's Admiral, Norwich Union, Churchill, Eagle Star, Equity Red Star and KGM. Norwich union have since changed theirs - they removed TPO cover on other vehicles completely, which is why I left them. Think I've only used it twice in 20 years, but it's nice to have, just in case!

Which companies do stipulate the clause you mention and what exect wording do they use?

Hey I just checked and you're right enough, they've dropped that phrase on all three of my current insurance policies. Excellent!

They probably specify that you are insured to drive / ride it, but as soon as you are not doing that then it is not insured. So stopping to fill up with petrol would render the vehicle uninsured on the highway when you got out.

All the best

Coppers these days have been known to seize vehicles for which there is no information on the database. I saw one video of a new driver who had recently insured her car, and protested repeatedly to the copper that it was infact insured. Her mother turned up with the docs just as her corsa had been winched onto the tow truck.

Some coppers can be anal retards Thumbs Down

I would be very cautious about the wording if I were you. Although it states you aare covered to ride/drive another vehicle that you are licensed for, that vehicle has to have a policy relating to it. I know this as that is how my FC car policy is worded.

I called my insurers as I wanted to drive a car home after buying it privately and they said the vehicle must have a policy.

Basically the wording is very misleading.

The only exception to this is if you have a traders policy.

for completely ignoring the innocent woman whom he was inconveniencing, and wasting his own time and tax payer's money. He was prepared to tow a vehicle because it wasn;t on a human-controlled database, and as we know with the DVLA & CSA, these are often useless at best. Surely he could have made one phone call to her insurance underwriter to avoid all the aggro! All he had to do was find out the insurer, call them and request confirmation of insurance, and then maybe give her a producer.

There was no need for the "it's not on the register, it's getting towed" attitude. It was way out of line and most unhelpful IMHO Thumbs Down

Oh right

He should've just taken her word for it and gone home then, people who drive uninsured surely won't lie?

Just to reinforce this point. A friend of mine ended up getting 6 points when he didn't read the small print and got stopped driving a car that he thought was insured.

DOC/TPO extensions often stipulate that you can only drive a vehicle not owned by you under this cover, otherwise people could insure their Daewoo Matiz and then use the insurance policy to drive their Scooby. The DOC extension is really only supposed to be for emergencies only.

yep, I was aware of that, the vehicle would have been in my daughters name but would not have had a policy on it.

That may be how your car policy is worded but I have yet to see a bike policy worded in that way.

Reference to stinkwheel. Razz

How would what i stated in my last post allow an uninsured driver to get off? All the copper had to do was ring her insurance company and ask for confirmation of the policy, and if in any doubt, issue a producer for good measure, which leaves no room for an uninsured driver to be let loose. He just decided to be an absolute pain in the arse instead, and wasted time and money, and probably gave the young lady a very low opinion of your average traffic cop. Personally, i'd have taken his badge number and reported him for being a complete tool.

i would have got done when my brother was pulled over by the police riding my bike. not him.
he got off scot free while i would have got 6 points on my licence.
except i dont have a british licence, so the judge let me go.
unfined, although i had to pay for the bike to get out of the compound.
this was all because the insurance middle man who i get my policy through said they would sort out the extra rider on my policy and would bill my card.
and then failed to tell me that they couldn't add another rider to a multi bike policy Middle Finger
not to worry no real harm done Very Happy

Probably as likely to lie as that useless database.

Twice I have been pulled up for (different) vehicles being flagged up as not insured, when both were insured.

Easy enough for them to issue a producer.

All the best
