I work in a petrol Station, and we only ask bikers to take their helmets off when entering the shop to pay. The reason for this is that we as cashiers are vulnerable with no screen up, just a counter and if anything were to happen in the shop we need the chance to get a picture of the attacker/theif's face. On the forecourt it is not a problem with helmets left on.

I worked in a Tesco extra station for about 18 months.

We had a sign in the window (I believe its still there) but it wasnt enforced. I'd never ask a biker to remove their helmet and neither would my colleagues. We never had any bother and no one would feel threatened, had no screen either, just a counter.

Never once had to doubt whether a biker was going to ride off without paying. You could guarantee they would come into the shop, hand the cash over, have a natter about bikes then they'd be on their way.

To be honest, we had more bother with chavs with their hoods up, standing at the pumps trying to fill a jerry can just to run off with it. Must get some kind of kick from nicking a fivers worth of petrol.

If anyone in the Stockton area is being harassed at their local station, just nip to Durham road Tesco.

I got asked to take my lid off the other day.

I asked why before taking it off - The till person replyed

' You have a MISS on your card & I couldnt tell if you were male or female'

Only once have I been asked to remove my helmet and that was at the new tescos at the richo arena cov
I had filled up with helmet on walked into the shop to pay with a £10 note in my hand and was told not asked to "TAKE YOUR HELMET OFF"
I asked if she wanted me to pay for my petrol she replied "you have to take your helmet off"
after doing this several times I walked out with the money still in my hand!
I was followed out by a member of staff who said that if I left I would be committing theft but as I explained that was bollocks as I had made several attempts to pay but they had refused to take my payment
at this point a police car arrived and to cut a very long post a bit shorter after they viewed the cctv and heard everyones story I left without paying and the staff were told next time to take the payment and shut up

i had one incident with a bp garage who cut the pump off after i put in £2.20 worth of petrol in, after giving the machine a few frowns and a nudge, a member of staff came out and told me 'take your helmet off, there are signs clearly telling you to remove them before buying petrol'

so er... looked around and asked where said signs are? the rather twatty member of staff pointed to a small sign near the door of the forcourt which was around 30ft away? (guy was giving me attitude by now)

i replied by saying 'how the f**k am i meant to see that from here?' guy shrugged his shoulders, decided it wasnt worth the hassle n took me lid off

guy took 2 steps towards the door then turned back and started asking me if i was old enough to buy petrol didnt have my license on me either at the time as i have never ever been id'd for anything, fags or petrol lol

followed wanker #1 into the garage and had an argument with the manager, who insisted on me repeating my date of birth. heres where it gets good... the guy said 'where do you live' '(my area around 2 miles down the road) well leave your ped there, and go home n get your id...

(whilst wanker #1 was trying to hide the sniggering)

well my reply was 'EITHER TURN THAT F**KING PUMP BACK ON AND SERVE ME OR IM FUCKING RIDING THAT PED OFF HERE'

wanker #2 just shrugged his shoulders so i stormed outaa the garage, made a mess of the magazines and kicked over a birthday card stand on my way out...

was the bp garage in telford... utter WANKERS funny thing is i never heard nefin from the police about not paying for the petrol so its all good.....

i must admit i always take mine off, normally just for a break ! so luckily i never have the problem, does the issue apply to people who flip up there crash helmets ?? you can see thier face then ?

all sounds like alot of fuss about nothing to me. I used to work in a garage years ago and i didnt ask people to remove their helmet but the station near me does and i dont have a problem with it. If you are working on your own in a garage then i dont think people realise that if someone drives off without paying it has to be logged with the police to get a crime number and goes as a black mark against the cashier.(happens ALOT!) Also If someone wanted to rob a petrol station then they would have to cover their face because of the cameras so i dont think its unreasonable to ask Bikers to remove their helmet before entering a shop of any kind. I dont always remove my helmet but if im asked to then it really dosnt bother me.... its called being civil.

edit: and yes i think burkas should be removed aswell but thats a completely different debate.

i would normally remeove my helmet unless im in a hurry just to get a little break from it in the hot weather really.

I had one garage out in the wilderness asking me to put my bike on the main stand before filling up (NSR125 and it didnt have a main stand) so i told him very polity where to go and rode off. You do get those who are to picky but most if not all round my area are ok.

If I am paying at the counter, I remove my helmet. If I am paying at pump, I keep it on. I am not religiously attached to my helmet that I would get offended if I am requested to take it off. It will of course take longer for me to remove and rekit (meaning that the pump is unavailable for longer) but I do not deliberately drag it out. Can't be fairer than that.

For those of you with the religious/cultural angle, if you think that you should be treated the same as women with burqas, or chavs with hoodies, more power to you. Just don't be surprised if you get more preconceptions directed towards you, as they do to women with burqas and chavs with hoodies. If you want to be non conformist, you gotta accept heat goes with the territory.

I commute 76 miles a day (wet and dry) and refuel every 3.5 days. I enjoy my commute on two wheels and I ain't gonna let something trivial like having to take off my helmet to refuel wind me up. And yes, I do wear glasses, headset, gloves, full face lid....

I have a friend who fell out with his bank...
He was trying to sort an issue and needed an appointment but they said they couldn't see him for a week. So he went in with his helmet on and just stood in the middle of the bank . They were very quick to respond and helped him resolve his problem very quickly,
