Here is my new GS500. Its on a 52 plate and is in superb nick. Only riden it home from the shop but seemed really nice, Just going to go for another ride now

One question tho.

When i get up to about 6500rpm it seems to cough and splutter a bit. Is this the restrictor kit? And also the dealer said it shoud be good for around 80mph but i was flat out at about 70. Its fast enough really but would be nice to know.

nice bike don't like the bent mirrors but everything else is nice. its a parallel twin isn't it? could be just the restriction. you could try taking them out then riding it down the road get it to 6k rpm and see if that solves it? but otherwise im completely mythed have fun with your new bike

I was also thinking of upgrading from my CG125 (2005) to a restricted 500 (CB500 all being well).

Doesn't seem worth it though if you only get 70mph flat out. The CG can already do 60-65mph flat out. Can't really be arsed for an additional 5-10mph all the extra expense of selling old bike, buying new bike, new insurance, potential MOT costs, more expensive servicing and parts, etc etc.

Methinks I'll just hang on to the CG for the 2 years restriction....

Either there is something wrong, or you are doing something wrong, if it is only doing 70mph. I expect the latter. Don't change up to 6th gear so soon (or is it 5 gears on these?). Rev it until you're not going any quicker in every gear, usually this will mean to the redline, but with the restrictor it probably won't quite make it in the top 2 gears (especially top gear). My guess is that you are changing up to top gear too soon and it just doesn't have the torque left to get you going any quicker (that's restrictors for you..). Should get 90-95 on the speedo on a flat straight with enough room.

sounds like the restrictors to me.
non of my bikes have ever been restricted long enuf for me to find out but it sounds like what my friends explain to me.
either wait it out and stick to the limits or bang them out.

Great little bikes they are, I had one as a courtesy vehicle after an accident.

Mine was restricted, did about 90 flat out. Somehow managed to get to 120 at one point, even with the restrictor in, and I believe 120 is more than its unrestricted top speed.

Great fun, love another one just for laughs.

it is the restrictors fella, you can take them out on a 500 and no one will notice.

its a 30 minute job.

My GS500 was Dyno'd at 35BHP and managed to touch 110 on a private racetrack in dry conditions

Is the exhaust 1 peice? I can't see any joins. Nice bike mate it needs new mirrors mind. My Speed Four would do 110 restricted.

I noticed the mirrors were not a pair but i saw no other evidence of a drop any were. I am getting some new mirrors anyway as all i can see in these is my arms or a tilt them out so far all i can see is the hedge.

Think you where right about it being me. Im still getting used to it and went out for a ride again last night, did about 40miles and got up to about 80 at times and it wasnt struggling then.

I need to get some new mirrors for it. I have tried ajusting them ones but all i can see is either my arms or the hedge on the other side of the road.

I have put my old ones from my CG125 on but i want to put them back on the CG ready to sell it. Anyone know where i can get some more the same sort of sixe for a reasonable price?
