i've got a cg125, but every other day i need to take it up a bypass, which means if i dont keep it at 60 or above i'll be slowing the "flow of traffic"

unfortunatly atm its comfortable at 50-55mph, and taking it up to 60 is putting alot of stress on it.

i know their bomb proof, but it wont be able to hack it forever.

i'm also still on a CBT and want to keep as legal as possible.

anyway, getting to the point, is much modification needed to get it comfortable at 60mph, or is it not worth the work?

Thanks

Not worth the work, although it shouldn't really have a problem getting to 60

I'd try new plugs, oil, air filter and make sure the inside of the petrol tank is clean

If you're feeling confident google NRP carbs and get a rebuild kit for your carb, see if that improves anything.

just knock a few teeth off the rear sprocket, your acceleration will suffer but your top speed will rise and 60mph will be accomplised with less revs, sprockets arnt to exspensive. could be just what u need

i'll try new plugs, oil and air filter and clean the petrol tank, but havent really got the place to refit a carb.

and is this sprocket kit the thing you had in mind phk6?

no not that one from my knowlage a cg is a 41 tooth as standard, you probly want to go down to a 37 tooth rear, to reap full benifits, or alternativly you could put a 16 tooth on the front for a similar effect.

im no expert and cant give u a top speed it will do with either one of them sprockets but they will probly give u 7-10mph on top speed and allow the engine to sit at lower revs at 60mph (what u wanted)

probly best to consult a mechanic before you do this mod tho as they will be able to give u better info then me.

It's not restricted by gearing though

It won't make enough power to get it much over 60...

I have the new model Honda CG125 (front disc brake) and it seems to be geared the same as the older models and has the same power output.

As long as your CG125 is a 5 speed and has the original gearing, the following should be true.

5th gear is too high, the revs are to low compared to speed. This means as soon as you get a decent head wind the bike will drop in speed by well over 10mph.

4th gear is needed for very strong head winds.

I have tried everything to get my bike to manage 60mph against a strong head wind and failed. I am 5ft 10in and just under 11 stone.

Things that have helped increase the top speed against a head wind.
Leather Coat
Change the spark plug from NGK DPR8EA-9 to DPR9EA-9 (the user manual states this for prolonged hi speed riding). I then used the NGK iridium plug = very slight improvement.
Shell V-Power
Silkolene Comp4 oil = real semi-synthetic oil.

All of these tweaks have managed to get me from 4th gear 52mph to 5th gear at 56mph against a strong head wind.

Of course the bike can easily do 60mph if you ride behind a lorry.

I have calculated that peak power of the bike and found in 5th gear its 66mph and 4th is 56mph. I would not worry about 60mph in 5th gear = your not over revving the engine. The real semi-synthetic oil is also meant to protect an engine at hi revs unlike mineral oil. When I say real semi-synthetic, I mean do not go by what it says on the label, real semi-synthetic is the one that’s one price grade lower than fully synthetic.

If theirs no wind, I can easily get to peak power (66mph in 5th) in seconds and maintain it all day long, without suffering vibration problems. But I always drop it to 60mph for very long trips (180 miles).

What you really need is a half or full fairing to slice through the wind. As well as a racing riding position. Wind resistance is the biggest problem, more important than power. Even a 21hp 250cc bike has trouble if un faired (it can just about manage 60mph but not 70mph against a strong head wind).

New model Honda CG125 peak power is at 9000rpm
Old model is at 8500rpm

Mechanics laugh at this low rpm. They say its so much lower than other 125cc engines that it could run flat out all day long and still last forever.

cheers Spoony and phk6!

i'll ask a mechanic about the sproket.

and i'm already using BP Ulitmate and got a leather coat, but i'll surely get the plug and oil, done about 1500 miles from when i bought it, probably could do with one.

i'm probably worrying about nothing, from just driving a car and this is my first bike.

it just feels unnatural doing those kinda revs

thanks alot Thumbs Up

Really, really don't worry about it.

The CG is the most indestrucable bike you are ever likely to own.

I only know one person who destroyed theirs. IIRC he continued to abuse it while it didn't have enough oil in it. The crank ate itself and destroyed the inside of the casing.

It's now on the road with another engine and he is taking a little more care of it.

60-65mph easily - you just need to get a bit more use out of the gearbox.

I really wouldn't fuck about with sprockets - the CG dosn't have enough torque to play those sorts of games with. My CG used to run flat out from Nottingham to Leicester and back again. In the absence of wind she'd touch an indicated 70mph.

Most most shitty weather conditions she'd do 60-65. If I was doing 50-55 it was because of sidewinds were pushing the bike all over the shop and she is easier to control at those speeds.

Hi there

I have a CG (still riding on CBT), I find that mine sits at 65 comfortably on a general flat stretch of road, with hills it sits between 55 and 60 depending on the hill, gear etc. Maximum speed I have had out of mine is just under 75 although I was going down a long steep hill at the time. In general I find it can sit at 60-65 without any problems.
