London Bike Parking - Advice required!

Bonjour,

I may have to pop into London on Sunday, in the Marble Arch area, and I'm wondering whether to catch the tube (slow) or take the bike (fast). I very rarely ride into the centre of London, and so haven't a clue what the parking is like for bikes. I'd go and check before hand, but I'm working right up until I need to be there.

The above lists several in the area I need, can anyone tell me whether they are likely to be busy on a Sunday between 10-1400hrs, and whether they are reasonably secure?

Plenty of NCPs round that area - £3 or £4 to park your bike for a day.

You can *usually* get into a bay in Portman Square but there's no security, nothing to chain it to.

secure parking with rails/ground anchors is availible, at these places...

Broadway, SW1 (2 sites) - hitching rails (38 bays)
Cateret Street, SW1 - in-ground anchors (21 bays)
Dartmouth Street, SW1 - in-ground anchors (8 bays)
Tothill Street, SW1 - in-ground anchors (6 bays) Dean Farrar Street, SW1 - in-ground anchors (25 bays)

But Mayfair and Marylebone, arent exactly nasty areas, so i'd say the four bays shown there around Portman square would be a good target for possible spaces, and a reasonably safe bet for security.

If no luck with those 4, then try Manchester square after that, but there should be at least 1 space availible somewhere, loads of bays to choose from.

Motorbike parking in Westminster is free in a SOLO MOTORCYCLES ONLY bays, just be careful about getting it totally in the bay, as the parking attendants are nazi's.

I orbit Marble Arch about 4 times daily on average, so will try and have a little recce for you tomorrow if possible. I shouldn't imagine youd have much trouble though.

Portman square is ALWAYS full, i can guarantee you that, even on the weekend!

There's one in mayfair, on Grosvenor square, by the embassies (american, canadian, indonesian embassy). There used to be acres of parking space until the bloody yanks decided, lets close off the road in front of our embassy rendering it useless - so out went 8 bays!

Loads around bedford square/russel square but that's too far away to walk.

21 Bryanston Street is often ignored by riders, but its a 1 minute walk from Marble Arch station, it is also NCP's UK headuarters, so any complaints you will not have to travel very far

The NCP sounds like a safe bet, as will probably need to leave my work kit in the top box.

Portman Square is your best bet, but as said by others there are loads around and I would hazard a guess they won't be that busy on a Sunday. As for secure, you'd have to incredibly unlucky to have your bike nicked or the top box broken into. It's a busy road and anyone acting suspiciuously will be spotted by the CCTV in the area or the numerous police cars that patrol the area.
