Hi,
just had a short blast with my mate, less than 5 miles from home we stopped and agreed that we would go really easy the rest of the way home. sure enough we jumped on the A316
just a we joined the carriageway which was a 50mph limit, a copper with a speed gun was monitoring the speed of the traffic.
i grabbed a little brake as better be safe than sorry and looked down and saw 54mph.
my digi dash hasn t been calibrated yet so am unsre the exact speed i was doing but know i was there or there abouts.
as we carried on riding a ninja 600 belted past us well over a 100mph and sure enough within seconds i saw blue lights in the distance behind us in pursuit.

anyway my question is?

can i still expect something in the post or is it more likely that the BLUES would of come and pulled me if i was speeding?

I doubt it. If your speedo is analogue it's probably 10% out anyway (although they can be less than this, I've never seen one better than 10% out) so you were probably doing around 49mph anyway.

And I think (correct me if I'm wrong someone), they have to give you 10% over the speed limit anyway, although I could be wrong.

There are also guidelines for the use of a speed gun that say you need to point the gun at a flat surface on the vehicle, like a number plate, which the front of a bike doesn't really have. Although this hasn't stopped them doing it anyway as TobyR will tell you.

They usually pull you over there and then with a handheld speed gun (I've been stopped twice, once they had me and let me off, the other time the copper was trying it on to see if I'd admit to it).

So you're most likely OK. Otherwise, if you haven't received anything through the post within 16 days (to allow for a late mailing, they must post it within 14 days), you're definately ok.

You usually see them too, they need to stand still and point the thing directly at you while holding it steady with both hands and looking through the 'sights'. If they weren't doing this, they weren't measuring your speed.

I had a speedgun pointed at me last night, he couldn't hold it too steady as the intensity of the light from it varied quite a bit. He seemed to be pointing it at my lid.

As mentioned earlier, your speedo probably reads incorrectly (too fast) anyway.

As a guideline speed cameras go for the speed limit + 10% + 2mph.

So 35 in a 30.

With a copper and a hairdryer it's more down to his discression. 99% you'll be absolutely fine.

I saw a thing on TV where the where showing how inaccurate spped guns were...

They were able to clock a stationary car doing 23mph, because as they aimed it at the car, it moved down the bonnet...

Likewise, if the aim moved up the bonnet, they clocked it doing 8mph in reverse Laughing

Bit stupid tbh, especially trying to get an accurate speed of a motorbike.

They had a Fireblade doing 30 with no one on it.

They've been tested for use against cars, but not motobikes...

not alot, the kwaka, just nailed it down the carriageway, through a set of cameras at well over a ton which i think to his luck did not flash.
me and my mate looked at each other well amused and the coppers when they got nearby they came up behind us as we were coming off the a316 when the guy carried straight on.
they soon realised this and went straight back on the a316.

we got 2 minutes up the road when a r1 and gixer stopped at the lights with us and they were saying stuff like "where the f$%k is dave". i quickly asked if his mate rode a ninja which he replied YES!
then explained what we saw and he was pretty shocked, they pulled over then tried to ring there friend.

me and my mate just carried on with our journey and that was that.

If yo get anything through the post, ask if the camera is calibrated to manufacturers guidelines, and if they had it in use within.. say.. 10 foot of a mobile phone(or a police radio/phone) thingy, as the signal can be apparently known to affect the 'capture speed' of the camera, they can't do nothing. I'll try to find a link, but my dad's mate got off with this. Thumbs Up

Nah you won't hear anything about more about it. It sounds like the people they were 'doing' for speeding were being stopped rather than it being an automatic ticket. And seeing as the guy on the Ninga was caning it and clearly didn't want to be stopped, he took the heat off you two anyway - that is if you were over speed limit anyway.

With speedos, I think most manufacturers set the tolerance for speedos to +10% of the actual speed. From several speedos I have compared to GPS, most are 2-3mph out at 50mph, so if your speedo said 54mph, you were probably doing 51-52mph. I don't think the policeman is going to bother getting you for going 1-2mph over the limit in a 50 zone. There's bigger fish to fry out there.

But, like people have already said, if they were going to give you a fine, they would have done it there and then.

I'm sure one of the traffic officers on here will know if I'm right, or just spouting rubbish!
