its my 16th birthday next month and ill have about £1000 to pay for a bike, insurance, lid. but im not to sure about how i get a provisional licence, cbt. im also stuck between getting a supersport and a scooter. getting a supersport would benefit me in laterlife as i aim to stick to bikes, but the price to buy and maintain are preety huge. would it be difficult to go from a 50cc moped to something like an aprilia rs125.

Hi mate.
Well I was in ur position a few months ago. Wink

I knew I'd be into bikes for a long time after my provisional license, and so went and got a sports bike style 50 (rs50) which I truthfully, on't regret doing.

It is slightly more expensive running, but the looks and gearing which helps you become a better rider imo is a valid substitute to that. Wink
If it helps, my insurance is £375 for the year, and costs me about £15 a week running costs.

SR50 are good scoots if that floats your boat.

the A2 test, made up of two parts at the minute, theory (about £20) and practical (£80?). You'd be restricted to 33bhp for 2years or you could wait and do DAS at 21 and ride anything.
If you are on the road for a year(50cc) you'll more than likely develop bad habits so going straight and doing a test isn't advisable. My A2 test/lessons etc was £400ish all in, but I think you can also pay hourly say £20 ish too.

If you have a 50cc for a year and get a 1yr ncb it'd help with ins too. An RVF400 at 18 with 0ncb no riding exp in my first year was £400tpft just for an idea. I dont know how 50cc insurance varies on the styles of bikes available ie supermoto/race rep etc but what I'd do is maybe a bog standard 50cc ped for a year and instead of progressing to 125 and 'doing your test on it' I'd save the money and get a 400.

You may want a 600 come the time after A2 and from people saying get one but for the extra on insurance, and the fact experience/ability at the time a 400 would be more suitable as they still go as fast round corners..

This thread has some ideas of bikes avail etc.

thx to you all for helping me.

if i get my supersport id be a little bit worried about leaving it whilst at colege. and i think it may be more sensible to get a scoot.

does anyone know anywhere that i could pick up a ss for about £900

Hi, Im turning sixteen in about two weeks and getting a supersport. I've just bought a Motorhispania RX50 and my first quote on how much insurance would be, it seemed pretty expensive compared to your price. Can I ask what company your with as I'm trying to look around for something abit cheaper, thanks. Mr. Green [/b]

I bought my RS50 about a month ago for £650, insurance £280 T,F&T.

Its a GREAT bike, but likes to drink a lot of petrol - around 50mpg

£10 to fill up, not cost me much else other than that - aslong as you are not scared of getting oily and know how to use a spanner and allen keys!

Will get upto 60mph easy (confirmed following car) and maxes normal conditions about 65mph (lying on the tank).

Lid £50, jacket £89, Another jacket (2nd hand) £15, getting some cordura trousers tommorrow for £40, gloves £30

I've been quoted £480, I can't think what the company was called off the top of my head but I think it was something along the lines of '1st Quote Direct'. But I wonder if medical conditions bump up the price by a lot?

Laughing Do any of you know where to get an exhaust re-restricted, or will I have to buy a new stock one? As the bike I bought is de-restricted, I've heard it's pretty dangerous to keep it restricted but if i crash, I dont want my insurance to be voided. Smile
Thanks, Anna.

Bought it private - £650

T reg - 1999

29k km on the clock (thats wayyyy too high for an RS)

Good condition, couple of scratches

Custom paint/decals scheme

Arrow Exhaust

2 spare mirrors, spare stock exhaust, spare screen, spare front brake calliper, pads, lever etc.

I was absolutely cr*p a couple of weeks ago and new nothing about working on bikes, but i've managed somehow, and the bike is running nicely!

Just re-doing the wiring at the moment (or parts of it anyway)

Picked up a luggage alarm this morning for £10, if the bike is knocked 5 times the alarm goes off (VERY loud)

Mine is the fastest RS50 around, i'm not bothered about the speed, but the previous owner was!

Tops out 70mph (down hill, side wind)

Yes it's my first bike, i was offered an RS x reg 6000miles last night for £300 - think it was verrryryyy dodgy though, and I think the people that offered it me were waitin to do a drug deal Shocked

Was reccomended to me by a friend - the bike was a couple of miles from my house, not advertised anywhere

You can ask, wether I will tell you or not is another thing altogether Very Happy

Preston - Lancs - North West

They are a very high maintainence bike, perfect for learning how to fix up bikes as you are working on it every weekend!

Normally takes me about 30mins each saturday, tighten chain, topup with 2stroke, Make sure electrics are all connected etc.

i supose that the maintanence will help me in laterlife.
30 mins a week is ok.

Sure. I'm with Lexham, and tbh You'd be very hard pushed finding a better deal premium with any other insurer company, at least with an Aprilia rs50 bike anyway Thumbs Up

You can still feel free to go onloine quote other companies as I guess you have been.

I advise doing what I did. Online quote first as then the details arel ogged, saving you time and money on the phone. Also by getting the quote online, then ringing, I found that they lower thep rice on the phone Thumbs Up I got offered by the CIA insurance £375 too, and lexham matched it. I took lexham as I knew they are specialists for Aprilia bikes. Thumbs Up

No probs.
As I say some companies I was nearly laughing down the phone at. Bennetts was one, not going lower than £680 so suit themselves, god knows where they got their reputation from lol.

I forgot to add, the excess (money you pay if you were to crash and proven guilty) is £500 hich is alot, just don't crash, easier said than done, but you'll find out with Lexham on the phone. Wink

i was in the same situation as you , i wanted either a supersport or a trailie but they were like double the price of scoots in similar condition,
decided to just go for a scoot and picked up a peugeot jetforce with 1300 miles for 600 squid. insurance wasn't too bad either ( 160 quid, lexham)
you might aswell just get a cheap little scooter then go for your A2 next year. someone mentioned 50mpg on an rs, i get about 140 miles on £6 of petrol.

not many supersports around here either, saw an rs when i was ridin' up to southampton but apart from that its all scoots.
