OK....

The bike: DT 125
Riding along totally innocently, there is suddenly a CLUNK and I lose all power, felt exactly the same as having no petrol. Revs were completely bogged down. I pull over, check the oil, the petrol, the fuel taps, and eventually decide it must be the spark plug until I try to turn it on again... No compression.

FUCK.

I had the engine rebuild 4000km ago, which cost a pretty penny, and now, out of the blue, this happens? Oh, come on...

I was initially going to attempt to repair it myself, but on reflection, the mechanic from hell is the one who should fix it, and free. RACC is picking it up tomorrow and getting it to him.

Any thoughts? Why did this happen? o_O

I had a DT 125 a few years ago, I pulled out of a junction, Give it some then it lost all power, Like you said as if it run out of petrol. Luckily I only blew the rings. The bike was fine 30 seconds before this when I was coming across the carriageway at 60mph.

It was a bad rebuild, no two stroke or you haven't ran it in properly.

I ran it in more than properly. 1000km of patient warming up and never going past 7k rpm. I cared for it like a baby. Once (after the run-in, this) I was running quite low on oil, but the light was only on for a couple of km and you could see in the deposit there was plenty left. Maybe that. I've also had a few offs, but I don't see how that would affect it. Anyway, If I'm lucky, the mechanic will assume the cost of it. If not, then it's gonna be done in my garage.

Jamie, from what you said, it sounds like it's the rings, because it's pretty much the same situation. How hard it that kind of job to do, and what parts do I need to source?

Check your oil pump, the cable may have snapped and it's not letting any oil in.

Depends how bad it is, you could get away with just a new piston and rings. You could need a rebore and new cylinder head. Does the bike still kick over? If so you should 'probably' get away with just a new piston kit Thumbs Up

Major update: The problem was that a chunk had broken off the piston. Incidentally, the piston had been replaced 5 months ago as I had the rebore, so the mechanic fixed everything 100% free of charge Very Happy

I'm a lucky bugger. But apparently, this engine model is prone to this kind of crap happening. Just turns out that mine happened a lot sooner than most. The verdict is, I'm getting rid of it at the end of the summer. I'll be sad to see the little DT go, but next year I'll be in barcelona and it's not the best city bike.

Look out for my forthcoming "next bike?" topic Wink
