basically.
applied for my provisional. i sent off my passport etc as ID
received my provisional but they had spelt my name as MATHHEW instead of the mor obvious and correct MATTHEW.
at my cbt I was told I could change it once I had passed my A2.
When I passed my A2, the examiner told me he couldn't change it for me. So he had to misspell my name on the certificate so that it matched my licence. Ideally I'd like a licence card and a A2 certificate with the correct spelling of my name on. Is there anyway I can do this? I'm realy annoyed, as I sent my passport to the DVLA and they STILL managed to make a stupid obvious mistake. Any help appreciated.

I am pretty sure that the A2 License pass sheet you got is only temporary. Thus that won't ever change.

When you receive your updated license I'd recommend contacting them and telling them that they misspelled your name and for them to change it. You will no doubt have to send your current license in.

You may also want to check the paper part of the license as it has a section to fill out changes regarding your address, I can't remember if there is a name part on there but its certainly worth a look.

name changes are a bit more complicated as far as I'm aware, you certainly need to supply proof of change of name if it's actually changed - my wife's just dug up her license and we've noticed it's not been updated since we got married, going through that whole process now.

Correcting typos, though, I'm not sure about - I've a feeling you may need to re-submit proof of name to show that they're wrong and you don't actually have a weird name.

They did that to me with the DOB.

Sent it all off and they sent a letter back asking for additional ID for a random security thing.

So off goes the passport.

And it comes back with the wrong DOB on - which means wrong driver number, and my instructer did the exact same thing you have described. I fixed mine about a year ago though mate and was fairly painless, but tbh I wouldn't hold your breath with ANYTHING to do with DVLA.

One person I know sent his license back for some reason and had his category removed! He went through hoops of fire and they say they have no record of him having ever done his test and he needs to re do his test! Use photocopies if you can.

Send the licence back with a polite letter expalining that they have spelt your name wrong. Be clear how it should be spelt and don't waffle around the point. They will alter it and send it back to you.

As for the A2 certificate, don't worry about it. I doubt you will ever really need to show it again and even so a slight spelling mistake won't make any difference.

Took 12 years to sort out a similar problem on mine.

Writing them a letter is no good, they'll just send your licence back with a slip stating there is nothing wrong with it.

Phone them up, go through the switchboard 'till you get to speak to an advisor.

Explain what has happened, they should be able to give you a specific office to contact (like "Dept. For arse-ups and fudgery. Sebscection 9, 3rd floor. DVLA, Swansea."). You send a covering letter and a photocopy of your passport, they then fix it.

It's hit or miss who you get on the phone. If you get a right spacca, hang up and try again until you find someone who can give you this address, otherwise it just goes in with the general mail and never gets to the person who can sort it out.

Letter should be brief and to the point:

Please find enclosed my driving licence and a photocopy of the UK passport which accompanied my original application. As you can see, my first name has been incorrectly spelled on the driving licence.

The correct spelling of my first name is: MATHEW

I am sure it is a simple typographical error, please could you arrange for this to be corrected and returned to me at the above address.

You might want to get your pass certificate processed onto it first so the spelling matches. Try including a note when you do so but I wouldn't hold my breath that they'll read it.

Once you've got your categories on, sort out the spelling. Have a certified copy made of your licence before you send it in to them! They have 'lost' categories in the past and refuse to admit their error.

To make a certified copy, photocopy your licence onto a sheet of A4 (you can fit the whole lot on, get both sides done). Write the following on it: I certify that this copy is a true likeness of the original document.

Get someone in a 'responsable' position (eg. Doctor, vicar, headteacher, army officer etc) to check it over, sign the declaration then date it and put their address and position.

You now have an official document which would be admissable in court as evidence. If they fuck-up DO NOT let them have this, let them look at it while you are there but don't give them a chance to 'loose' it.

A bank also used to be able to do you a 'certified copy' of pretty much any document for a small fee.

And pray to god you don't get your licence back with the motorcycle entitlement removed, like they did to hundreds of bikers a couple of years ago. Did they apologise and fix their error? Did they feck, they told them all they'd have to re-take their test. Even did it to a motorcycle traffic cop (as was posted here).

The DVLA is staffed by some of the lowest curs in the country. Arrogant, thieving bullies who think they're a law unto themselves. Un-monitored, un-regulated and utterly criminal.

I tried to renew my tax last year - but realised i didn't have the Log Book.

So i contacted them on numerous occasions and was told 'It was sent to the dealer.'

So i asked the dealer and they denied it.

I then asked to speak to the Manager at the DVLA (Having to fork out £19 for another V5 just so i can tax my bike) and it turns out they sent it to the wrong address in the first place.......

At least they gave me my £19 back.

I've had numerous dealings with the DVLA over the years - there are some normal people working there but I can confirm that there is a higher than average proportion of 'sub-normal I.Q.' staff with a 'couldn't give a toss attitude' employed there. They're probably Lidl customers as well...

thats why my license says MATT instead of MATTHEW as the DVLA are incapable of spelling a name more than 4 letters long

If i did that at work I would be in the shite as customers details cant be wrong and must be correct. Why is it the dvla are able to get away with it

I every belief they did, but when we are talking courts and they want I proof I sent it, I wanted proof they never received it and were threatening to take me to Swansea court, I had no choice but to pay, I wasn't going to Swansea court, and I aint getting a CCJ over the bar stewards. But like I said, a quick chat with the fella on the phone, he entered the wrong amount on the system(by accident of course) and only deducted half the fine off my card, then closed the account
