Revvier than it's bigger brother, 996 etc.

Just make sure the belts get done regularly i.e. bang on service time. There are a few ducati specific forums that it may be better to ask on though.

Another potential problem with the 748 is the rocker shafts. Ducati replaced the rocker shafts on certain 748 models after a bad batch was discovered, not too sure of the years affected but mine were changed during a warranty service and the bike is an '03, you should really check this one as they are VERY expensive to replace if they need doing.

As for the bike itself, as Big_Ham says they are revvier than their big brothers and need to be kept above about 6-7K to work well. The 748 is not the fastest bike around and will not match a modern 600 for straight line speed but with good suspension settings there is probably not another bike around that will match it's handling.

Stock suspension settings are way too hard and I struggled with the bike until having the setup done by a race bike specialist and have heard similar comments from other 748 owners.

Definitely not a commuter bike as they need to be warmed up to get the oil up to the top end every morning and when ridden slow in traffic the tall gearing and stiff clutch combined with the head down arse up position make it a nightmare to ride in town, definitely not a pillion bike either.

Something to do with the chrome flaking off wasn't it?

I was looking at a 748 for my next bike......

Old style ducatis main thing is has it been serviced, Belts need replacing every 2 years or 6,000 miles.
Bearing tend to eat themselves and rockers are a weak point too.
check for mismatched panels as its easy to tell because they will all be slightly different shades of red.

Electrics arnt quite as strong as the newer dukes so ive heard.

I owned a 749 and even toured on it and didnt have one problem .
(that wasnt my fault )

more than i can say about a CBR600RR of mine.

I'm so with you on that one.

I'm also the owner of a cbr600rr (05/06) and have been nothing but dissappointed with the build quality. Every screw is plastic and once you take screws out you can't put them back in.

IMO, Honda is too obsessed with saving weight and has forgotten about practicality.

Luckily my local ducati garage replaced all my fairing screws with proper ones and even cleaned my bike! (And all I asked was to have my end-can fitted!)

Ducati servicing: expensive but you get what you pay for.

every bolt on an RR is made of cheese and those rubber tubes with brass inters inside for the fairigns fall apart
The poorest build quality of any bike ive ever owned
good thing ive sold it and gone elsewhere Wink

My Ducati had brilliant build quality, attention to detail is way better also they are a hell of alot easier to work on than ANY full faired jap bike i know of.

Well...speed and torque is nothing you will have to worry about I can tell you that! Laughing after being pillion.

They aren't the most comfortable, which you may have guessed Rolling Eyes

Very thirsty.

Services are very important, being Italian, not the best constructed.

Instrumental wise, there is bob basics - analogue everything, and no more than you would want. Great bike no doubt though Mr. Green (sorry I can only comment on being pillion on my uncle's bike.)

But like you have been told, try this forum, should help you alot more Wink

Not true, although they do have a pretty small tank you should get about 110 miles before reserve which is about the same as all my other bikes ive had.

If your not /that/ interested in the styling, look at the 749, they are dirt cheap now the 1098 is out, its more reliable and has digi clocks etc even an ouside temp gauge.

Excuse me? I know for a fact that mechanically, things go wrong on a "typical" 748 Ducati and need regular servicing and maintanence, more so than most bikes.

Oh, you "know this for a fact" do you? How many 748s have you owned then?

Ducati dealer services are expensive but in my view essential during the first two years whilst the bike is under warranty. Since the warranty ran out on mine I've kept the cost down by having the engine servicing done professionally and do all other work myself. Genuine Ducati parts are surprisingly not that expensive and readily available.

All bikes have their 'critics' but from experience I've had my 748 for 4 years and it's never let me down, apart from services the only other outlay has been for a couple of indicator bulbs, tyres and brake pads.

I would never contemplate buying any Ducati unless it came with a complete and verifyable service history.

That's a very fair point. (Although that goes for all bikes, in my view - unless you're buying a winter hack)

Although I must say that I was impressed with the service. The ducati dealers seemed like they were there coz they love Ducatis and bikes.

The Honda dealers seem like they just want you to be the 'nth' sale that day..... (and heaven knows I've been round more than my fair share of dealers!)
