Hi guys boy has it been a long time since I have been on here last! I recall the last time was when my engine siez\ed on my piece of **** oh my god what was I thinking buying one chinese cg125 clone it really is true when they say you get what you pay for! I have begun a new phase in my motorcycle life I have purched a 2002 Gilera Cougar 125 it is a very nice cruiser style bike (4 stroke) I was very luck with it it has been looked after infact its immaculate chrome shining everywhere etc I have had her for a month now and no probs I got her for £600 with 8,800 miles on the clock I have been told by numerous people that its worth at least 1000 so im pleased.......THE PROBLEM.........

Not really a problem but man is it slow! its not designed for speed its designed for comfort but I can only get 40-45 out of her granted im not pushing it to the extreme at that speed but I can tell she is happy doing 40 but anymore and she will start to complain, the bike has had everything done to it new filter etc etc etc I am guessing there is some kind of restriction on it somewhere which leads me to my question! How do I de-restrict it? I have no knowledge on how to do this so please inform me

Thanks for the link paddy, Although it kind of lead me up a dead-end as the guys on there claim speeds of up to 70-80! please keep the suggestions flowing

My wife has a gilera couger, nice little bike.
Her speedo will only read up to 40 /45 mph yet i have been riding my trike along side her and she has been doing 70mph!
Apparently there is a problem with the speedo's not working properly, a new one will still not solve the problem!
If your gilera sputters and does not want to run right check the rubber intake flap under the rear mudguard, if its been pushed in it will restrict the air flow into the air box and cause it to run like a bag of poo.
Spares can be dificult to locate and be expensive, i.e:
Gilera dont do fork seals for it, they will sell you a set of forks for £350 +!
You can do the seals, the dust covers are from a honda nsr and the seals are from a yamaha for under £30!!!!

I recently bought a Gilera Cougar myself - and have been slowly going through all the bits and pieces that have needed doing on it. Mine's a 2003 model which had about 19,500 on the clock when I got it in April (now has about 30,000).

The engine that should be in it is that wonderful unit from the Honda CG125 (branding is generally removed from the engine). The 2003 engine gives a miserly 8HP.

When I got mine it was a little sluggish and the top speed was nothing to write home about (around the 50MPH mark). The following have had a drastic effect:

1. Shell fully synthetic oil
2. Shell V-Power fuel (made a surprisingly noticable difference to performance)
3. Irridium spark plug "DPR8EIX-9" (cost a little under £10 but runs significantly better than the standard unit and lasts a lot longer).
4. After checking the inlet manifold (rubber tube between carb and engine) it had very slight fractures - replaced this and noticed more pull and a higher top speed.
5. Replaced the Speedo

The Speedo unit on the Cougar is notorious for being unreliable. I have replaced mine with a digital unit (one of the first things I did). The bike now cruises nicely at 68MPH - indicated.

Just had the tires replaced and enjoying the tremendous handling. Have Pirelli Speed Demon's on front and back. Did have a Pirelli MT75 on the back previously and the tire was terrible in heavy rain.

All in all the bike is fantastic to ride (which is a good job as it has already done a Nottingham to Cardiff run twice - as well as a few other long stints).
