right been looking around cost i bore of my bike and wanted something different next year but can see the point???

bandit 38mpg???
hornet 44.3 mpg
cbr think myns about 50 mpg

how the hell does that work out right 600 low tuned torque lump does less mpg than myn that sits at 13000 rpm and never does less than 100mph every day??!??!?!?!

others like fire storm seen for like £2000 ish ( in yellow Shocked ) but they are worse i think.

Might as well ride my damb dt125 100mpg but probly costs as much in 2smoke oil Laughing

The Hornet is better than the Bandit because its a newer engine. I suspect that the difference in MPG between your CBR and the hornet is due to the "detuning"

If you want outright MPG buy a CG 125 or a Cub 90! Smile

Try an RGV250 or another 2 stroke 250 twin.
And then your realise how happy you should be about oil and MPG.

anyone say less than 30mpg,
Apart from the storms Wink

I want an RGV 250 please! Very Happy
Or and NSR 250
or a TZR 250
Or a KR1S at a push.
Or an aprilia RS 250 (except I can't afford one)

If your looking for fuel economy, the best economy should in theory be on a low power bike with lots of cylinders - the idea being that to make 100bhp, you need to burn 100bhp's worth of fuel and air, so to make 50 bhp you need to burn a lot less.
Having more cylinders is just more efficient.

It also depends on a the tune of the engine - gooseys old CBR 250 should in theory have been great on fuel, but it was tuned for such a narrow powerband that anything outside of it was ineffiecient.

If your looking for general cheap transport remember the cost of consumables too - my VX returns about 45mpg, which isn't great, but tyres cost £140 a set and last 8-10k miles, sparks plugs are £7 a set and last 10k, or a year, whichever comes sooner. You can use any oil, and the only weak point in the electrical system is the reg/rec.

Same goes for GS500, CB500 etc - all cheap to run, give around 50mpg.

Are you going for something quicker or something cheaper? or maybe both.

don't real need to go any faster but wouldn't be against it Laughing
whats a blade like or an R1 perhaps a less peaky bike would do a bit more as i seem to always be falling off the bottom of the power band at 6500 on mine .

cb500 i thought were a wast of time like 50 bhp down and still don't do any more miles per gallon ?!?!?!?!?

my tyres i have done 6'000 miles on my cbr and still got HUGE amounts of wear left and would like to stick to a honda preferably and NOT a yamaha!!!! as they seem to eat spare parts ( well mine do)

My rd does about 24mpg at the moment I think ... really need to sort out the exhausts Confused.

In the end... I'm willing to pay a bit extra to get a bike that's more fun... otherwise I'd have stuck with the 120mpg or whatever from the cg Smile.

Hi

MPG figures between different sources are rarely comparable. Different uses will dramatically change the fuel consumption (eg, my cheapy lhd car does about 20mpg round town and 39mpg on the motorway sat at 80~90).

My 1200 Bandit when commuting to work manages 45mpg pretty consistantly. When it had one tooth less on the front sprocket it knocked 5mpg off that. GPZ500S for the same useage gets just over 60mpg.

For good fuel consumption you want a long stroke engine, so basically less cylinders with the same bore is better. Add a heavy fly wheel and things will probably be better on gentle runs. Also extra valves are useless for fuel consumption.

Ironically an engine is at its most fuel efficient at full throttle, or close to it, as that reduces the pump losses caused by the throttle.

All the best

Keith

I think a full sports 600's will always be better on fuel than the Hornet/Bandit, as they have full fairings, and the overall gearing is taller, so the same speed uses less revs. I also think that the engine de-tuning process doesnt do the Hornets mpg any favours, even tho it uses smaller carbs which should drink less fuel? My zx6r generally averages 52-55mpg, and ive never seen less than 48mpg. My mates Fazer600 was never anywhere near as good on fuel, but then his tank is bigger, so it didnt make much difference to fuel stops etc. I did manage something like 61mpg when running it in, but that doesnt count!

I could get 180 miles to a tenner on the CB500.

Won't be seeing the likes of those figures again Wink

The GS500 was around 50mpg. It was very cheap to run in every way really.
The Firestorm did 40 miles to 5 litres of petrol when I got it yesterday. I can see this thing being very costly!
