I've always loved the stock look of the 04 R1 and until recently I have kept the bike virtually stock since I got her (pillion seat cowl with rear footpegs removed and Yamaha racing screen were the only mods). I've thought about changing it for a K5/K6 GSX-R1000 but can't let go of the 04's looks and I'll never ride either bike to their potential so thought I would keep the R1 and spend a little bit of money on her and thanks to eBay I managed to do the following for around £700 while maintaining the stock appearance:

Nothing over the top and easy to put back to stock if needs be. I might go for a few more parts in carbon fibre but nothing major.

Proton Lights Flushmounts

Custom Baffles and De-cat Y-pipe

I'm really pleased with how it all turned out and it's running well; the exhausts are much cooler and the power curve has been smoothed out and the levers are very comfortable.

I really like all the mods you did there. Personally would have gone for new cans but think its quite tasteful keeping the stock ones and they do sounds nice now!!

How much were the new internals for the stock cans?

By decat do you mean you took out the catalytic converter?

Didn't know you could do that.

I just changed my end-can and removed the baffle.

I prefer the stock cans so was glad I found out about this mod.

They were about $90 including delivery from A&R's eBay shop. In the kit you get two baffles already cut to length and cut at the correct angle for the tail end, two packs of Vance & Hines baffle packing, 12 aluminium rivets (Yamaha used stainless steel and so did I), and some PTFE tape.

That's correct, although I didn't actually de-cat my original one and got one already done when I bought the extra set of cans for the baffle mod.

I got the cans, de-cat Y-pipe and downpipes from an eBay auction for less than £100 delivered! This meant I could keep a set all completely stock should/when I need to put them back on.

cracking bike but personally i think flush indicators really are a no no. the idea or restricting the signals that you give to other road users of where your going isnt a good idea.

orange lense with blatant indies sticking out the side is the way to go.

Very nice bike. Particularly like the idea of the decat and changing the baffles in the stock pipes.

Means you don't have to fork out for a set of new pipes but it still sounds NICE!

Good point. I took it to show someone and it was included in the copy and paste I did. Very Happy

I know what you're saying. The Proton Lights flushmounts are the most visible I've seen of this type because they bulge out but I have kept the stock indicators so may put them back on for this very reason, although I like how clean the front now looks.

Thank you everybody for all the kind words by the way. Thumbs Up Smile

Would love a set of pazzo levers, i dont think i could justify spending that much on just levers though.

I thought about aftermarket levers when I first got the R1 because I found the stock clutch position uncomfortable but had the same feeling about the cost. While I was doing the other mods I thought it was a good time to change the levers as well and I don't regret the expense one bit, in fact they are much more comfortable to use and now I can adjust the position of both levers.

I got the Pazzos from eBay and they were about £120 delivered after Customs got hold of them, but this was still cheaper than the prices I found them for in the UK by about £10.
