What a lovely weekend! Chez and I were a tad bored on Saturday so we (well Chez actually) decided it'd be a good idea to go to Scotland. So we packed some clothes, grabbed the map (Which was replaced en-route) and headed off up the M1.
We settled on Glasgow as it was on the main M'way into Scotland, it was getting dark and we were hungry. I really wanted to go see somewhere pretty, like a nice lake (loch apparently) so we went to Strathclyde Country Park. After driving most of the way round the park we notice the Alona Hotel. 4 star and only £65 per night with Breakfast! I've stayed in some "posh" hotels and none were that cheap so I reckoned it was per person Very Happy We went in and asked and Lo it was not! The Hotel was plush as fook and the rooms were gorgeous. The food we had there was excellent and the service impeccable ('Ark at me Very Happy)
Yesterday we drove through Glasgow, into and through Edinburgh then visited Edinburgh Castle. Chez tried desperately to find some haggis (bought in the end at Tesco) and we headed home via the scenic route. The A7 is a loverly road and I hope to have a go on the bike next year.
All-in-all we had a great weekend, Scotland is a gorgouse country and has some of the best views I've ever seen!
The Alona is the best Hotel I've ever stayed in and I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

Glad you enjoyed it, and that was only the central belt! Next time you have to get further north. The hotels get cheaper and the roads get nicer and there are even less cars!

The only problem with scotland (apart from the scots and the weather (sorry bendy)) is the fact that a lot of the nice A roads have speed cameras on for absolutely no reason. Evil or Very Mad

I work with a load of scottish peeps and everytime I get a phone call from a scottish person I usually have to get them to repeat what their saying about 5 times "they never CAN say anything clearly" Evil or Very Mad.

Sorry to scottish people outthere but your accents are a problem I have to deal with everyday.

Thick Scottish accents can be hard to understand (as can any thick accent), but from my experiance the Scots are some of the most friendly people you'll find. Unlike a lot of Londoners....

So no sweeping generalisation there then.
Any thick accent is always hard to understand if it's foreign to you, but not every scottish person speaks like Rab C. Nesbitt.

No, but it's funny when they do Very Happy
I actually found the Scots I met to be more genuine and friendly than most of the non-biking Brits.

Thye also make us sound sexy to the opposite sex - especially foreigners. Very Happy

Many times I've been on holiday and at first the locals think you are English and look down on you but once they realise you are Scottish they suddenly become much friendlier. Very Happy

We only saw 2 speed camera's, both of which were on the main road into Edinburgh. There were lots of those lines in the road as if speed camera's used to be there though Question

There are speed cameras everywhere on the A1 between Edinburgh and Newcastle. I got flashed by two in 20 minutes once. Never heard anything about either. Very Happy

I've gone into Edinburgh via the A7 route to avoid cameras in the past - there aren't any that way but the road is like a sodding rollercoaster - wouldn't fancy it in the dark.

Everybody drives slower in Scotland cos of the different laws up there - thats probably why a lot of speed cameras around the city have been removed in recent years.

Question

I think a BCF outing next summer to Loch Ness and the Highlands could be in order. Sod all cameras and more twisties than you can shake a stick at.

I agree Bendy. Me and Chez were thinking of oganising a weekend up there.
We went M1, A1, A66, M6, M74 to Glasgow. I think there were only 2 Gatsos on the entire run.
Big fakoff accident on the M1 had traffic queueing for miles, but it was on the other side so we were fine Very Happy

You want to go up the A1M and round the coast between Newcastle and the Forth Bridge. I always take that detour when I drive up to Aberdeen as there are some cracking roads and cracking views to boot.

Make a long weekend of it in the summer and it would be a grand trip. Smile

GFK... no reason why not. Best thing is just to set meeting points all along the way, then folk can proceed at their own speed.

I'd love to ride my bike in Scotland, but I can't be arsed with the painful bit of riding from London.

I'll either ride mine up, taking in a couple of stays over night in interesting places (like Stoo's house) on the way up, or if we have a few people interested, we just do it trackday stylee with trailers and vans, establish a base somewhere (campsite) and ride out from there.

Highlander, you won't have a chance in hell of keeping up on a restricted NSR. A derestricted NSR can kinda keep up on the corners but obviously not on the straights.
