Just wanted some opinions from anyone regarding Redex "fuel system cleaner" ...

Does it really work, or is it just a complete waste of money??

I have an unopened bottle that a neighbour gave me, and was considering using it in the GPZ. But I also don't want to risk any damage or ill effects from using it.

Let me know.... Thumbs Up

So does Diesel, and it's cheaper.

If you want to clean your engine, buy petrol with extra cleaning inbuilt.

Shell V Power, BP Ultimate and Tesco 99 all have extra cleaners inbuilt.
They do cost more than standard unleaded, but may return better fuel economy and engine performance. There are other extra things in these petrol’s besides cleaners.

They are all worth a try.
Best advice is try them in the above order or try whatever’s most convenient for you.
It can take 2 full tanks before its cleaners really get going.

If you do not notice any improvement, switch to another brand or back to normal unleaded.

Honestly, do you just copy and paste this message?

If you love it so much why not put some in through your oil filler cap as well? Wink

Using a cleaner in any engine is a very good idea.

The fuel companies, engine manufacturers and the environmentalists have all known this for a very long time.

There are cleaners in normal unleaded, but they are not sufficient. Reason is simple, Unleaded is screwed down to the lowest price, so no high quality cleaners are in it.
This is not only my opinion, the fuel companies also claim it.

Normal unleaded will leave burning deposits inside the engine and build up over time.
This leads to a lack of power and increases emissions.

Car drivers have to pass an emissions test as part of the MOT. The device measures the exact amount of emissions out the exhaust. Its been show time and again, the extra cleaners reduce the emissions of a dirty engine.

Cleaning out a car engine is so important now to emissions, its often part of the service to send a special cleaner all through the fuel system to clean it out. People that have had this cleaner all through the system have then noticed an improvement in the fuel economy, smoothness and power if they are running on normal unleaded. Of course over time if they continue on normal unleaded the engine gets dirty again.

You are ether a complete idiot.

Or you are deliberately trying to cause an argument since that’s what you get off on.

You would swear that black is white and white is black if it meant you could have an argument about it.

If you post anything else on the subject, I will ignore it.

Mate,

There has been 10 seperate posts from you advising people to use high octane petrol like it's the be all and end all of solutions... Rolling Eyes

The best solution is to remove the carbs/injectors and clean them, and reassemble, and find out WHY the carbs/injectors are becoming clogged, ie:

Check for sediment in the tank
Check the fuel lines for contamination
Clean/replace the fuel filter(s)

If the bike hasn't been stood for a while, there shouldn't be a 'varnish' in the carbs.

My bike had been standing for a while before I got it, and was stuttering when you got to about 6k in lower gears. Tried changing the plug, cleaning out the silencer, thrashing it, etc, none of which worked.

Put a good dose of redex in the tank and went for a good long ride and the problem completely dissapeared. Count me as a satisfied customer! Very Happy

Redex was probably a good product to use many years ago ,but with todays fuels having detergents in them, I'm not sure it's worth it.

If the bike has been stood a while I generally use Silkolene PRO FST. I understand this can clean the carbs and makes starting easier. Also add a little if it's a little cold in winter as I still have carbs. The info is here - click me and also covered in this thread.

If the bike is running a little 'lumpy' I'll put a shot of redex (for 1 or 2 tankfulls) in to see if it sorts the problem rather than the pain and time it takes to strip and clean 4 carbs and rebalancing.

I chuck a splash of Redex in every now and again (maybe once a month max) to help flush through any crud and it seems to do the job. The ZZR's been a little "Lumpy" recently on startup from cold so I'll chuck some in the tank when I'm changing the plugs at the weekend.

I swear by the stuff. Run it into the airbox to clean the entire engine every 3-4 months and stick a shot in the fuel every fillup (shell v-power).

Long distance commuting demands smooth delivery and good fuel consumption.

Cheers for all the replies, I'll carry on using the Redex (it was free after all), with my regular unleaded for now and maybe try some of the premium petrol afterwards.

I'll be keeping a close check on the fuel consumption for the next few months, so I'm hoping it'll give an indication of which is better for the efficient running of the bike Wink

Try not to put too much effort into it! Biking is full of MPG bores as it is! Wink
