Hi all, i got myself a project i picked up for £100, Gilera ICE 50. needs some work to go back on the road, mainly plastics like the fairing. While i am waiting for the new plastics, i am doing some work on the engine. I decided to de-restrict it, i have removed to gold circle baffle from the carb airbox already, and i know there is a restrictor in the exhaust, im doing that last cause i need my uncles mig welder. My question is does anyone know any other places its restricted? i looked on the Variator for a washer on the little spindle. i didnt unscrew the variator, just put my finger on it and i couldnt feel anything. Does it have to be completly taken off to know if you have one?

Some people did say something about a limitation on the CDI, and you have to cut a purple feedback wire. Anyone know if this is true on an ICE?

Hope someone can give me some advice on this.

Thanks.

You can tell if it still has a variator restrictor by looking how far the belt gets on the front pulley. Look for the shiny section where the belt runs, if its right to the edge (ie 2/3mm) then its done, if its 15/20mm then its still restricted.

Upjet the carb to about 62/63

Derestrict the exhaust and jobs done.

Theres no restriction on the CDI on any 2 stroke Gilera/Piaggio.

Thanks cheekythomas, do you know where i can get the wrench tool for the variator nut? its like a special hex spanner that holds the variator wheel to stop it turning while you undo the nut. will order some jets, Cheers.

Found one. Looks like i do have a restriction on my variator, but i cant see it. Could it be inside behind the pulley?

Here is a pic, looks like its not using the whole of the variator, But i cant see anything stopping it

take the entire variator off, and look at the rollers and see if a cage / plate is stopping the rollers from going fully up the ramps

variator wrench? dont you mean locking tool? anyway, i ulways used a large screwdriver in the metal starter gear teeth to lock it Smile

oh, and be careful with the actual nut, its made of crap metal and rounds off easily. get a proper stainless nut if possible.

Thats the one. didnt know what the damn thing was called. You didnt chip any of the teeth on the wheel? did you like wedge the screwdriver in somehow or hold it? must of been quite lose if you held it?

From that picture it doesnt look like it has a restrictor in there... also looks that its going all the way to the edge of the variator pulley (but hard to be sure on piccy)

just checked it, nothing in there. Seems to be on some models of the Gilera ICE (must be a few?) but not on this one. This is my first 50cc project, i have only messed with 125's before and this seems very slow on acceleration, Takes a high Rev to get it moving so i think the rollers are heavy as shit. What you think?

Cheers!

oh well i cant get the nut off, even with the wheel firmly jammed. i will just assume for now its not restricted on there, and check it when i get the locking tool and change rollers.

have the belt / rollers ever been changed? if its done ~ 5k miles or less, then probably not, and the nut was last done up at the factory. you'll need an air impact wrench to get it off.

it was registered in 2004, so id say its done more then that. i cant actually tell because the clock is digital and cracked. i have a new one coming in 2 weeks. the belt actually kinda looks new. So even using a metal locking tool wont help me undo it?

You dont need an airgun if your using the proper locking tool... just a 15mm socket and a bar! Wink

All piaggio 50cc 2stroke autos have the variator restrictor, its the biggest restrictor of them all.... just looks like its been removed already. Loads of garages do it just to keep the customer happy. Takes the machine from 28-32mph to 32-38mph. Not enough to draw attention from police but enough to keep with general traffic, as on a 30mph road most traffic is doing 35mph in the real world.

Std rollers will be 19x15.3mm and 6.4 grams... if ya wanna boost bottom end but keeping the std exhaust drop to 5.0/5.5 grams. If ya gonna fit a expansion type race pipe then you can drop a little more say about 4.5/5.0 grams.

Ah i see, i think its already been removed. Thanks for the info on the rollers, i could do with some lighter ones that you stated because this thing is so slow on acceleration.

Thanks guys for all the help!

When I removed the variator on my scooters, I got myself a Bolt about 6cm Long, and I wedged it between one of the starter motor teeth and the bottom of the tranny casing.

Again, with a decent socket and a long ratchet, I got it off. its a very tight nut, It was actually that tight the first time I undid it I was actually wondering weather it was a left hand thread.

What sort of speeds do you think you are reaching?

My sister has a Gilly ICE which has got a Leo Vince ZX Pipe fitted and de-restricted. it will easily get to 50mph, But wont go a bit over, Even down a big hill it will only get to about 53-54mph. The great thing is it will do a comfortable 40-45mph up most hills. Smile

Anything really, anything is better then a 30mph restriction. im used to being on 125's so i dont think i will keep this for that long, just untill i pass my full test. Provisional+CBT has too many restrictions.

Why do 50cc's seem to be alot louder then say 100+cc? is it down to the bore size? Im guessing so.

Where was the restrictor on your variator? was it where the belt is? or behind it?

Didnt you snap the starter motor teeth?
